This was another case of obama voters voting for gillum because he was black. Democrats are stupid that way.
It didn't matter the baggage he brought with him because as close as the main party does its due dilligence on major candidates, many people knew his issues. They just hoped it wouldnt get out.

He is a democrat, black, a crook, a druggie and cheats on his wife with men, the perfect democrat politician
