Pretty rainy in Indianapolis.
Watching a rerun 500.
Did they actually run it? I think I saw that there was a winner on my news crawl.
I stopped watching it after Jim Nabors (Gomer Pyle) stopped singing "Back Home Again, In indianna."
Yes, the rain stopped, and the race was run.
Josef Newgarden accomplished something that hasn't been done in over two decades: win the Indy 500 in back-to-back years.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't it "Al Unser Sr." that did it most recently? Or, Mario Andretti?
When I was a kid the Indy 500 was a BFD across the culture. Now, hardly at all. That's a real shame, since it is true Americana. But that America is slipping away fast.

350,000 people watched that event, live. Best attended sporting event.
18 races thru the year starting with the Firestone Grand Prix in St. Pete and ending in Lebanon TN.

More people than ever also show up for the Kentucky Derby--doesn't have anywhere near the cultural impact it used to have.
I have no idea how old you are, but if you remember the 500s from the 60s and 70s, it was a huge story across the country--everybody watched it. Everybody knew who Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt were. Good luck getting one in 50 people to name a 500 driver today.

I'm guessing your 'culture' is different from mine.
Open wheel racing runs in the veins of my family.
I raced 1/4 midgets when I was 6 years old.
Go-karts, micro and 3/4 midgets in my teens and twenties.
I attended every local race event for decades.

Yes, the culture is different from your family. So much the better for your family.

I remember watching Indy 500 on TV every year growing up in 70’s…along with World Series, Miss Universe, NFL/AFL championship, Kentucky Derby, Oscar award, etc. It was part of our culture in those days
You may not be of my flesh and blood, but you are of my heart and soul.
