I created a general 'woods carry' thread here:

https://www.floridashootersnetwork.com/ ... f=7&t=3764

It has a poll with most of the major/typical woods calibers that one may chose to carry in the woods. If you haven't seen that thread, please stop by and vote and post your comments.

For this thread, I wanted to post a couple of specific choices to chose from. So, between the two choices in the poll, what would you prefer as a woods carry caliber, what pistol/revolver would you prefer and why did you make that choice?

I will add other polls with different choices.

.357 mag: Availability and ability to shoot .38 if .357 isn't available.

357MAG, because it can be loaded with heavier bullets. Depending on the woods 158 to 170 grain bullets.

.357 Mag. I load 180-grain XTP’s or Sierra’s FPJ’s over 12-13 grains of AA9 for my 1894C.

I respect the thoughts behind the reasons for opting for the magnum. However the firepower angle of the Sig option is very appealing.

I agree. I 'grew up' on revolvers and my first personally owned firearm was a 357 magnum and I love shooting them. Having said that, shooting 357sig out of either my HK P2000 or HK USPc is pure joy. As much as I like the magnums, I know that I'm faster and more accurate shooting 357sig out of either of those platforms due to the way they handle recoil. True, you can't go as heavy a bullet in 357sig, but I figure for our area a properly loaded 357sig should be able to handle most any typical threat. And having 12+1 rounds of 357sig just seems to beat 5-8 rounds of 357 magnum for my purposes.

I have a Marlin lever in .357, similar to this:

Very light and handy, and you get a boost in velocity from standard loads.

.357 Mag for two reasons:

It was my first pistol when exploring the mountains in my home state of Montana many moons ago. As my dad advised, it you're too lazy to carry a rifle, carry this...just in case Mr. Bear is afoot and in a bad mood.

Had a .357 Sig once, but it's just not the same, so sold it while keeping that first revolver from long ago
