Successful hog hunt on the Space Coast.

On the afternoon of 6/7, thunderstorms rolled over me as I sat in the most comfortable blind I’ve ever seen, waiting for the hogs to show up.
I was doing my first hunt with Central Florida Trophy Hunts near Mims, just north of Titusville.
About 6:15, between downpours, a sounder (that’s what a bunch of hogs is called) came in from the north. Four of the pigs were big, much bigger than any I’ve seen before in Florida. One looked like it was the biggest and didn’t have a string of piglets trailing behind it, so I didn’t have to worry about it being a momma. He (as I found out later) was snuffling up the peanuts I’d scattered near the feeder when I centered the crosshairs on his neck, right behind the ear. At the shot, he dropped and the rest of the sounder split.
The hog turned out to be a “bar hog”, slang for a male hog that’s been castrated. They make the best eating, because they don’t spend their time chasing porcine tail and filling their bloodstreams with testosterone.
My guide estimated his weight at around 300 lbs, but it’s his job to make the client happy. When it was weighed, it ran 252 lbs, by far the biggest hog I’ve shot.
I used a T/C Venture bolt-action rifle that I had re-barreled from .300WSM to .450 Marlin. The .450 is a modern version of the old 45/70 that killed so many bison; big bullet at moderate velocity. The 350 gr Hornady at 1865 fps certainly did the job on this hog, breaking the spine and severing at least one major artery. I found chunks of spine scattered on the ground on the far side of the hog.

Excellent operation at Central FL Hunts. Amazing stands, a PH that does everything possible to ensure the hunter is successful and leaves happy, always asking the hunter exactly what he wants and then getting it done for him.
It’s going to take quite some time to eat all the meat from this hog and when it’s gone, I’ll be going back.

I had CFTH quarter it. Half went into my hunting buddy's freezer (my wife would freak if I took up our entire freezer) and I boned out the rest.
