a friend is wanting a trail cam to see what type of predators
are trying to get into their chicken coop. what reasonably priced
cams do you guys recommend ?
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools !

I 've been using 3 of these Tasco 8MP cameras for 2-3 months and they work great. Great pictures day or night with decent IR and sensor range. I just ordered 3 more this week and will probably order couple more. They are under $30 but works better than most of my $100+ game cameras.

I saw the 32GB microSD cards for under $7 today at the checkout lane in my local Walmart.
