Confirming FFL for Online Sale?

Post by Tenzing_Norgay »

Sold an 870 on Gunbroker. Buyer is asking me to ship to his "FFL", which is an Army/Navy Store. No indication on their website that they buy/sell firearms. He indicates they won't provide a copy of their FFL to a non-licensee (e.g. - "It's not needed for a non-licensee").

Sooo...how do I know I'm shipping to an FLL?? :?:

EZ Check?

https://fflezcheck.atf.gov/fflezcheck/

But I’d still push for a copy. For your records. A copy to put in the box never hurts either.

You need an FFL Lic. # to use EZ-Check. It's not listed on the Army/Navy store website...

You should at least be shown an image, so you can get the information. From that, you should still check. I had people offer to buy something on Armslist, and ship to an FFL, no problem showing me a pdf, but it was a fake. So, yes, you need the info, and need to check. I would contact gunbroker on it. IIRC gunbroker has a list of FFLs by area. Offer one that's legit in his zip. Not acceptable? Then report to gun broker, and possibly ATF.

If Gunbroker won't confirm the FFL, but you have the name and address of the receiving FFL, go here: http://www.fflregistry.com/Search-FFL-By-ZIP/ and type in the ZIP code to get a list of FFLs within that area.

If you find the name of the shop, click on it to get a partial display of their FFL number, which will look something like: #-##-XXX-XX-XX-####, where the "#" is a digit and the "X" is just an "X".

Take those numbers and plug them into ezCheck here:

https://fflezcheck.atf.gov/fflezcheck/

This will confirm the name and address, and the expiration date of the license.

Then, go to that state's Department of Corporations (in Florida, it's Sunbiz) and see if the business is registered with the state and if the information matches the other info you've been given and/or discovered.

As a further check, go to Google Maps Street View and type in the address and see if you can get a photo of the business at that location.

It's not foolproof, but it's corroboration from multiple unrelated sources. If it still doesn't feel right - go with your gut - you can always find another buyer or a more cooperative FFL in this market.

Don't forget to ONLY ship to the address shown on the FFL on file!

Absolutely. I compare that with the Gunbroker info. If it says "Ste. A" on the FFL, it's going to Ste. A, not B...
