Isn't a rifled barrel shotgun a rifle, not a shotgun?

Just got an email, PD trade in shotguns-

https://www.recoilgunworks.com/remingto ... dium=email

I thought rifling in a shotgun made it a rifle? And then it being 12 gauge would be over the size limit avoided by sporting purpose exception, right?

*shrug*

NFA makes my head hurt- Why am I wrong this time?

a 16 inch gun on a battle ship has rifling, but no buttstock, is it considered a rifle, or just a firearm ??

don't over think it, and for Christs sake don't write any ATF determination letters

The firearm is the receiver/serialized part. As long as requirements such as length are followed, it's a shotgun if the receiver is one.

As far as the battleship is concerned, that gun is referred to properly as a "16" naval rifle." It's amusing when one uses that term and people visualize a 16" barrel carbine, rather than a one ton projectile.

Isn't a smooth barrel in the definition of shotgun? You know, because rifles have rifling?

Rifled bores over .50 Caliber are automatically considered Destructive Devices unless they are specifically granted a waiver. Rifled Slug Bore Shotguns are granted waivers since they are shooting low pressure, short range loads for the most part.
