Rust freckles

I have been given a 1948 Remington 241. The bore seems okay, but the finish has rust freckles all over it. I have read to scrub the finish with oil and 0000 steel wool. Is that standard, or is there a better way to get rid of the rust? Thanks, Fridlo

You can use the old copper Penny routine.. It seems brutal but it works... I have had just as good a luck with oil & steel wool and you can compromise and use copper wool..

Thanks Indy, I'll give it a try with oil and the copper penny.

Oil and steel wool works great, but you can go down to bare metal easily.

You need to go lightly with the steel wool.

Let it float on the oil, dont bear down too hard.

Just keep in mind steel wool is bound wire ...anytime you rub metal on metal you're sure to damage a finish.

Many people have had good luck applying kroil and then taking an old pair of blue jeans and lightly scrubbing.

The Kroll will actually break up most of that surface rust and penetrate underneath of it lifting it slightly to where you can then rub it off with the blue jean denim material.

fridio, listen to rent.
Kano's Kroil will penetrate and lift the rust, rub it down with a old t shirt of a piece of denim.

I have Kroil, so I'll give it a try with denim. Thanks, guys.
