Original and refurbished or rebuilt M1 rifles are still available to the public through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP), but the age of the rifles dictates some care in what is fired from them. The CMP warns against any load over 50,000 CUP (Copper Unit of Pressure) or a bullet larger than 172-174 grains.

Not what the CMP said. They said "The CMP advises to not use .30/06 ammunition in M1 Garands, 1903s, and 1903A3s that is loaded beyond 50,000 CUP
and has a bullet weight more than 172-174gr."
50,000 CUP just happens to be the SAAMI standard for .30-06. Commercial loads are fine, even heavy ones. What they're warning against is some Bubba cooking up a bunch of hot loads.
