Whip Making

Postby 180sxdrift » Wed Feb 08, 2012 5:49 pm

Hey guys, I didn't see a thread about this here, so I figured I'd start one. It's been a 3 year or so obsession that's recently picked up again. I make different whips out of nylon parachute cord, between 200-400 ft of cord go into each one, de-stranded and tapered. Nylon is a great material to work with over leather due to it's durability, and resistance to water, not to mention cheapness. Some can easily take 20+ hours of all hand plaiting. Here's some of my latest work:

7' fancy snake

8' indy style for a good friend of mine

6' 14.5" handled fancy bull

Enjoy, I do some contract work as well(those of you that might be interested). But I've got 10+ whips in my personal collection, so if anyone is in the central florida area and would like to meet up and learn a thing or two about cracking, let me know!

Thanks,

Adam

Very nice work. I do a little paracord stuff myself, but nothing that involved.

Nice work! If you haven't visited Cracker Country at the Florida State Fair, you may want to make a trip over to Tampa in the next week or so to check out some traditional whips. The Fair starts tomorrow, and they always have a guy making cow whips at the Cracker Country exhibit, along with many other pioneer-type crafters.

I've got a really nice Mark Allen kangaroo whip that I ought to get out an play with, it's been a while.

How does the nylon compare to more traditional materials as far as useability?

flcracker - I didn't know they had a whip section at the state fair, I might have to go check it out!

jhartman413 - 6' 16 plait two belly bull starts at ~$120 in whichever colors you like, add roughly $15 a foot from there. Stockwhips I'd sell for $100 or less. Snakes maybe $50-$100 depending on length. And if you're local, you can try these types out before you decide.

ipscscott - I've never handled a roo whip, but from what I understand, nylon can roll out and crack every bit as smooth as a roo whip, with added abrasion resistance, moisture resistance, and nearly zero maintenance. It'd be nice to have a fellow whip enthusiast to crack with one afternoon!

rug357 - We can make that happen [smilie=icon_wink.gif]

paddledan - There's a variety of sources on the web, and two books I recommend, Whips and Whip Making, by David Morgan (original whip maker of the Indiana Jones whips) and How to Make Whips by Ron Edwards. However, almost all whip-makers have a different spin on their making methods, so take whatever you see on the whip with a grain of salt!

Oh yeah, I've been working on these lately. Man are they a hoot. Good for the cat and/or the wifey _:

Thanks for the kind words all,

Adam

Great looking whips. I happend upon a leather whip when I was a kid. I found it right around the time I saw "Temple of Doom". I can't tell you how many times I try to get it to wrap around a tree limb so I could swing from it. Even my "Indy-like" hat and jacket and singing the theme song didn't help! That is absolutely beautiful work. I would love to try one out if I ever get to the area. I have not had mine out in a few years. Neighbors and dogs don't seem to like it as much as the kids.

Can you post a youtube. ? I have never seen one made from synthetic material.

Had Traditional Bullwhip years ago (30). It dissappeared in 1 of our many moves.
Was between 6 and 7 foot, but its been a long time,so not really sure.
Do you have a website setup to sell them, and if you do I would be very interested.
Would be very useful keeping alligators away from my Bobber while fishing. (JK) [smilie=pdt_xtremez_13.gif]

Been a little while since I posted. I just sent this one out this past week to a friend/customer in Hawaii on military duty.

I'd like to get a website up soon, but for now, I'd like to get feedback on the first few whips I make for the purposes of selling (I'm also not charging nearly as much as an established maker for the initial run).

You can email me at oldfieldwhips@gmail.com or PM, and we can discuss details of what you're looking for. Additionally, if you would like to see how they throw, there's several videos on youtube of paracord whips, Adam Winrich is a favorite of mine, lots of good stuff on his channel. Thanks!

Just saw the youtube of Adam Winrich swinging two at a time. Now that is remarkable. I forwarded it to my boys so they would have something to work towards. I would like to try out the 22 footer. A friend had an 18 footer when i was a kid. It sounded like a high powered rifle. It took a few weeks to get used to one that large. Thanks

Got a few more done in the past couple of weeks, figured I'd post a little eye-candy, while I took the time to snap some pics!

First up are a couple of stock whips. Barely broken in. a 4' in emerald green/black and 5' in tan/black. These aren't too pretty, they're meant to be whips that aren't afraid to get bashed around a bit. (please excuse the dirty/used whips)

Next is a 6' Delongis style whip, in lime/black, with a very stiff transition area. This whip throws very nicely!

Following that is my first set of matched whips, 5'. I enjoyed watching this set come together.

Finally, my first go at a leather whip, this is a 4' snakewhip, 8 plait natural tan cow-hide.

Hope everyone had a good St. Patty's weekend! :ber
