Ha !..... 1/14 twist proven !

Postby Rentprop1 » Thu Oct 06, 2011 12:58 pm

I was arguing with another at the Miami shoot that the AR once had a 1/14 twist and no one would believe it

here it is sucker [smilie=back.gif]

The damage caused by the .223 (5.56mm) "varmint"[24] bullet was observed and originally believed to be caused by "tumbling" due to the slow 1 in 14-inch (360 mm) rifling twist rate.[25] However, this twist rate only made the bullet less stable in air.[25] Any pointed lead core bullet will turn base over point ("tumble") after penetration in flesh, because the center of gravity is aft of the center of the projectile.[25] The large wounds observed by soldiers in Vietnam were actually caused by projectile fragmentation, which was created by a combination of the projectile's velocity and construction.[25]

In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

The Colt 601 had a 1/14 twist. The 602 model changed it to 1/12 twist.

You'll find the same info in Duncan Long's "The Complete AR15/M16 Sourcebook." You mean you don't have a copy? [smilie=cheers1.gif]

I'm not sure I would trust Wikipedia as a completely reliable source however. They did at one time report that the moon was made of cheese.

I have bought maybe 6 or so of those over years thinking it is a reliable sure fire weapon and every time I go to the range I am reminded I don't like poor ergonomics, lousy accuracy, sloppy junking guns.

I agree the piston is about as reliable as one can be and that is why I bought a PWS MK114 because that AR piston platform is based on the AK gas system (so is the very reliable Daewoo DR100/200.)

So, I have the things good about an AK without having to put up with all the things I do not like about an AK and I have an M4 I don't have to clean that is reliable, accurate with great ergonomics and a Geissele trigger that is wonderful.

Yes, I want my cake and I want to eat it too!!! [smilie=pdt_xtremez_13.gif]

yep, I prefer the rate of 1/12 or 1/14 for 55gr rounds, they perform better in soft tissue as they are barely stabilized so they are accurate and when they hit they tumble magnificiently. I had a M16A1 upper w/ a 1/12 or 1/14 and loved it
