In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

Can't they detain you until they conduct a walk around with a drug dog with no or little reasonable suspicion?

The world of the law and the 4th Amendment, Rentprop1.

I don't know about the case law down here, but in Washington the officer had to make a pretty strong case to detain an individual beyond the original purpose for the stop.

I realize there is a natural reluctance to tell an officer "no," just as officers don't like to hear "no" from mere "civilians" (actually, "citizens," because cops are civilians, too). But you either have rights or you don't. And you lose them by not exercising them.

you tell me what to say and how to say it with out being combative or having the officer take it as being a smart ass, and I show you 10 ways they can create or find probably cause, you're living in a dream world if you think spouting off about the 4A will get a LEO to halt a search and not look for another angle [-(

Funny, I've been there on several occasions, too. Never had a problem. Never hassled by a cop when the issue of carrying came up.

I guess attitude is all.

"Officer, there is nothing illegal in my car." End of discussion.

I don't think it is that simple. If you tell the officer ''end of discussion'' that's exactly where he will pick it back up.

"Again, unless you are arresting me, I'll be on my way."

If you drive off you will most likely be charged with fleeing and eluding an officer and then you can kiss most of your rights good bye.

I think the less you say the less of a reason you will provide to have any officer wanting to search your car. And guess what you are not giving up any rights by just doing that.
As I have grown older, I've learned that pleasing everyone is impossible,
but pissing everyone off is a piece of cake.

Short of a Terry search, I've never consented to a search. I've been asked a few times. I just said, "I'd rather you didn't," and that was the end of it. Sure, some cops will try to bend the law around the circumstances, but the further they try to bend it, the less likely something will stick. Why make it easier for them to stick you with something?
...and they think I'm compensating for something?
