SOCOM 16 w/ wood furniture pics

Postby OnPointFirearms » Tue Jun 01, 2010 1:33 pm

I know it's been done before, but I've marveled at these configurations for years on the discussion forums and figured it was time for me to convert one of my own SOCOM 16s to wood.

After browsing the BTF used stocks on Gunbroker selling for upwards of $90, I got an e-mail from Boyd's. They had brand new walnut M1A stocks for only $106! Ordered the stock liner w/screws, front ferrule, and sling swivels from Fulton Armory. The existing butt-plate was an easy transplant, but the ferrule and liner were necessary because they're molded into the fiberglass stocks. The front swivel screws included with the Fulton kit were too long and interfered with the action. So, the Dremel came out and cut them down to size. Over the weekend, I removed the screws and put in a couple of rivets. Here are some pics.

Some rifles are just made for wood. I like the fiberglass,but this is one of those that nothing really appeals to me like wood.

Nice photos. I'll have to shoot some of my SOCOM 16. It too wears wood. Like IDPAMASTER, some rifles are made for wood. Yeah, the synthetic might be more practical, but it just doesn't "do it" for me on this gun.

I've currently got one of the brown upper hand guards (it looks much better than the black) but I'm seriously considering dipping it in a wood grain pattern to match the stock.

Yeah, I bought a brown fiberglass handguard from Fulton too, but haven't figured out what to do with it yet. I really don't want to take off the scout rail, so I might make some cuts with the Dremel.

Just use the black one as a template,and have at it. That would look nice.

Mind=Blown

Sweet looking rifle man!
If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains set lightly upon you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. – Samuel Adams

I paid 1500 for mine about 5 years ago. Came with an extra stock, bipod, and a handful of mags.
You want one. It's definitely my favorite.

probably pretty close. I got a smokin' deal on it mostly because of the extras. Should be able to find a lightly used one for around 1500-1600 I'd bet.
