They have a very loyal following. What caliber? The Savage 99 was produced in several calibers.

Savage 99 is a classic lever action rifle with a rotary magazine so pointy bullets are okay whereas most lever actions use a tube magazine where the projectiles have to have a blunt nose to prevent recoil touching off rounds in the magazine.
As was mentioned above the 99 came in many chamberings. Avoid ".303 Savage" as they haven't been commercially available since Remington stopped production back in '97... Otherwise if you like levers, the 99 is one of the best.

In that case, as long as it is in good shape, it will be quite desirable. They make great hunting rifles.

Thats why I'm tradin' him,for huntin'.The .270 is like new an I'm paranoid about screwin' it up,the Savage has been "used" so to speak, the bluing isn't perfect or the stock so then It doesn't matter if I drop it in the brush an scratch it up,+ a little more punch.

Yea. If it's got my name on it then it is almost guaranteed to be a cartridge that spends long days in the woods without ever seeing anything to shoot at.

I had a chance to shoot couple rounds from one of the later ones with the detachable magazine instead of the earlier rotary magazine.
The rifle was in .308 and looked nice but actual fit and finish was just okay at best.
The rifle was pretty light and one thing I'll always remember is that it kicked like a mule.
I'm used to recoils and it doesn't bother me much but that rifle was not fun to shoot.
I don't remember the accuracy and I think I shot 3 rounds and then gave it back... it was no fun.
I've alway heard that earlier one with rotary magzine were very nice with nice fit and finish.

Is it one of the older ones with rotary magazine or newer one with detachable magazine?
IF it has the rotary magazine I would jump on it for sure.
IF it has the detachable magazine I would still jump on it as it's an interesting rifle.

Have a friend with a 99 Savage in 308. His name is "Coon". Guess it's a 308 Coon gun.

Neat gun. Shoots well with a decent trigger. They were classic rifles for decades and well-made. Probably why they are no longer made. Machining cost was undoubtly high.

As for recoil, to me the 308 Winchester is a "small" cartridge with little recoil. That's a good thing for most shooters. Like a 30-30 that I now have shooting at an energy level close to 308 short barrel rifles, it's fun to shoot, mildly powered with mild recoil. Still an effective and successful cartridge.

My newest rifle is almost finished. It is based on a 308 case necked to 6.5MM (.264) and then re-configured to a 40 degree shoulder (Ackley) for less case stretch, more capacity and better ignition characteristics. You can do a lot wih a 308.
You do not have the RIGHT to do WRONG.
