SAR-1

Postby MiamiE » Sun Apr 24, 2011 8:32 pm

Im considering purchasing an SAR-1. I'm a little scared after the debacle I went through with the WASR. I think CAI makes the SAR-1, or made them in the past. What should I expect to pay? I'm waiting on pics and a price. Anything to look out for? Maybe someone can give me a little background on it. I am waiting for someone with a 1982 Romanian to PM me back but it's been a couple weeks now. Maybe I should wait if this doesn't work out.

I have a very nice SAR1. Straight sights, less than 50 rounds fired. Its been sitting in my safe for years.

the SAR-1 are so much more desirable over the WASR's , price on them still remains in the low $ 400's...

front sight and gas block cant seem to be about the only thing to look out for as in any Romanian AK
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

Canted front sight is the most common problem and all SAR-1 rifles have it to some degree.
Other frequent problem I've seen are trigger slap.

they aren't made by century, they are made by CUGIR and imported by Century.

They are ALOT better than WASRs and I think have a small premium on them. I'd say anything up to $500 is a fair price right now.

Thing to look out for: If you want a threaded barrel to put a flash hider or muzzle brake on these do not have a threaded barrel. It can be threaded if you want to do it, but it does not come that way from the factory, and is a decent amount of work if you want to do it right.

I have a SAR-2 (same thing but in 5.45x39) and love it. I think it's a bit higher quality than the Tantals or AK-74's Century has out now. I bought mine used and the previous owner had threaded the barrel after the AWB expired, but it doesn't have teh pin/plunger in the FSB for indexing the muzzle device, and is threaded in 1/2x28 (AR-15 thread pattern), so i just put a Phantom flash hider on it.

Well it seems as though Century did have a part in modifying it to some degree. Seller wants $500. Unless I can get it for $400 I'll wait on the older Romanian rifle. Thanks guys.

ive had both a sar and wasr.(still own the sar). The sar might have a little better build but it has trigger slap, and no threaded barrel. For 500 bucks the better deal is a wasr @ 400 as long as you get one with straight fsb and no mag wobble.

I have heard great things about IAC/Interarms...

I asked if he would consider $400-$450. Hopefully I don't scare him off.

I'll try to find the box it came in (I normally keep them) and see what's in it to include. Probably a sling, magazine and maybe an oil bottle. I don't remember the SAR's coming with a bunch of stuff. Anyway the gun is just like it came out of the box. I only took it to the range once for test firing. It worked perfectly. I shot less than 50 rounds, cleaned it and its been in my safe ever since.

Guess I offended him, but he has a point about the junk out there.

No, I really didn't plan on selling it and if I had I would have asked over $500 for it. I have four other AK's (2 Polytech's & 2 VEPR's) so I figured I'd let this one go. But, with all the mix-master junk AK's that have been available the last few years, this is definitely worth over $500 to me.

True but I am beginning to see that if it's not WASR it's not under $500. I may have to jump on this one. I don't like that the muzzle is not threaded though.

if you get it and want the barrel threaded, killerone on the forum threads barrels and he's in south florida too. I'm not sure what he'd charge for just the threading, but he does good work. I had him move back the front sight, turn down the barrel and thread the barrel on my Saiga 308. All that plus shipping back to me was less than $100

SAR-1 is miles ahead of a WASR but they can have some 'wasr' issues like canted sights/gas blocks. They have mag dimples.

I have no experience with the SAR-1, however I recently purchased a WASR GP 10/63 from J&G Sales online and it's not a bad rifle. I paid $449 for it. I re-did the furniture and it looks awesome. I've only shot 120 rounds of russian ammo with no issues. Front Sight is basically straight and has no mag wobble. From what I've heard and experienced the newer WASR GP 10/63's are much better than the older 10's. All my numbers match too. Bolt, carrier, trunion, and even the gas tube are all matching. The dust cover and bayonet do not match though. Plus it has threaded and chrome lined barrel. No trigger slap at all. Has a new US made Tapco Trigger. I bought a Tapco front sight tool off eBay for $12 bucks and sighted it in. I also put a Hogue grip on it too.
