Ruger 10-22 Auto Bolt Release

Postby grahng » Mon Jan 30, 2012 9:35 am

I have read and seen pictures on how you can adjust the bolt release on the 10-22 by filing down the nub on the bolt lock back.
Can anyone tell me if this makes the weapon less safe. Seems that any jolt to the weapon could accidentally release the bolt, possible chambering a round and then, well............
Maybe I am overly causus here, but Ruger made it like it is for safety reasons.
Comments please.
Thanks, Jerry

i never had issue. and i'd think it would take quite a jolt to auto release it.

There is nothing that can't be ruined in 10 seconds or less using a Dremmel with proper attachment.

I did it on mine and it turned out well. It is not less safe.
I imagine if you remove too much material, you could cause the issue you describe. remove only a little at a time and test, stop when it works. If you f-up, a new factory bolt release is only a few dollars.

The mod is not a problem.

If you want to be cautious, then purchase an auto release from ebay and keep the old one so you still have the option to change it back. If you have an older 10-22 pick up the extended mag release and replace that too.

Thanks guys. I feel better about it. I'm no gunsmith, but I'm no dummy either LOL. Guess I'll get to work on it tomorrow.
Any suggestions on the extended mag release. I know their are a few brands out there. Any of them work better than the other?
Thanks again

I've done it to 2 guns, no problems. It can be bumped shut, but if you're paying attention it shouldn't be a problem. I'm using the Rimfire Tech bolt handle and mag release on my current 10/22. Kidd, is nice stuff too. May use it on my next build.
