Rifle upgrade.

Postby arkhangel5 » Thu Dec 17, 2009 12:26 am

Well, I had posted before that I was going to upgrade my Rem700 SPS-V and had a put a new stock on it. Well finally bit the bullet and had the rifle rebarrelled. Old barrel had nearly 5k rounds thru it, but still shot good, sub-moa to 600yds, just wanted to see if I would see any difference with a custom barrel(my first).

Work was done by a local gunsmith, bolt and receiver trued and barrel installed. Barrel is a Brux Heavy Varmint contour with a 1:10 twist 4 groove in chrome moly, finished at 30in.

Scope is Nikon Monarch 6-24x50mm target dot. Stock is Bell & Carlson Medalist Adjustable.

Shot it today to break in the barrel, cleans up nice. Need to fine tune my match load to work this setup.

We're gonna have to take you to the f-class nationals in Sacramento in March!!!

I hope your Brux is at least half as good as mine. That would make it excellent.

Sadly Eric, I won't be able to make Sacramento. That is right in the middle of my Easter rush, and I can't take that type of time off. I would really love to see how it would perform at 1k. Chronoed my match load with this barrel today and averaged 2700fps, it was 2640fps with the old barrel. Gonna be testing for accuracy nodes soon.

Wow, I remember when you first got that rifle. Looks nothing like it did before, and probably shoots ten times better, although I suspect the guy behind the trigger may have to take a little credit for that too. [smilie=pdt_xtremez_30.gif]

Here is a pic of rifle with the old barrel in the foreground to give an idea of the difference in the contours.

So where are Brux barrels made? Is it Wisconsin, like "all" the other top makers?

Yes Dave, made in Wi. Really nice outfit, but they are so popular now the wait time has doubled since I ordered this barrel to about 10wks.

Guys due to work commitments and shitty weather I havent been able to visit the range since October !!! :ham'r

Trying to please a very demanding Boss and building a new company from stratch, on the quiet, is taking up most of my spare time.

Port Malabar looks great and I would say arkhangel5 you have set yourself up in the new enclosed area, which is a great addition to the range.

Yes Nicolas,
That is the covered 600yd line. Bummer that you havent been able to shoot since Oct, but a big +1 to owning your own biz. Will be meeting Glockpacker out at the range on Fri and Sun for the team match. Havent done much load testing with the new setup, but my old match load shot under 1/2moa with no adjustments, so left it there for the time being. Am testing a Varget load, for more velocity for possible 1k comp, it is looking good so far.

Good luck with your 'BOSS' [smilie=011.gif] . Where the pics?

Well its been almost 2 years since I posted this. The barrel now has over 4200 rounds thru it and the accuracy is starting to go. The throat has eroded so far that I can no longer touch the rifling with a 185gr Berger without the bullet falling out of the case. This has been a really good barrel and shot very well, but is now time for a rebarrel.

Along the way, a few changes were made to the rifle in the original pics. I changed the stock to a regular Bell & Carlson Tactical, to save weight, and added a McRee Precision Adjustable cheek piece. The LOP is set to 14in. Started off with a Timney trigger, but have since changed over to a Jewell set @ 10oz.

I am probably gonna rebarrel with another Brux, but maybe a little shorter and lighter.

Weight of rifle with present barrel is 17.4lbs. F-class rules allow 18.2lbs. With the A-5 stock that was on before, the total got to 18.4lbs, hence the change.

This is what it looks like today, and am about to rebarrel. Am thinking of going with a slightly thicker and shorter barrel.

After reading through this thread I ended up with a lump in my throat after seeing Glockpacker's remarks..... have to say I miss him.

My Pac-Nor barrel is lighter than the Brux version, have you considered Pac-Nor ?

I thought you were getting better results with a 30" barrel ?

Are you thinking of going 6.5 x 284 ?

Yeah Nic I miss him also. I think he would be pleased if he saw the turnouts we are getting for the matches these days. Competition is stiff and Eric was partly responsible for that.

I was getting great performance out of the 30in barrel, but it is so unwieldy(nose heavy), but after shooting it so much and watching what others around me were shooting, I don't need 30in for the mostly 600yd shooting that I do.

I spoke with a machinist buddy of mine and we are going to set the barrel back rather than replacing it, so I can get thru the rest of the season, then rebarrel afterwards. Saves time and money. I am still ordering a new barrel, but that will be for next season.

No, I am not going to 6.5x284, I shoot F/TR not Open class, but I did build a 6.5mm(260 Remington) to test out. It shoots great out to 600yds and is a pleasure to shoot. Way easier than .308 in the wind. and I get to use most of my .308 reloading equipment to load for it. I have no plans to shoot in Open class just yet though.

You doing any shooting?

Dave, yeah, I need to get hat picture off the floor. [smilie=011.gif]

Nic, 6BR is something down the road for me. I like shooting F/TR, you learn something new every day. Gonna get a chance to do some gunsmithing on my own rifle/barrel. Will see what happens.

Well. Had the barrel set back and a new chamber cut with my own personal reamer. Buddy did work for me and we added a Holland Competition recoil lug . Barrel is now 28in long instead of 30. This was ladder testing to see where my accuracy nodes would be.

I think 44gr is gonna be a good load.
Target shot @ 200yds. 3/4in black pasters. The 44gr group measures .540 edge to edge. The 43.8 group started out good, but I yanked the last shot, gonna have to retest.
