Remington Gunsmith..

Postby Robs » Mon Jun 21, 2010 12:29 pm

So I have this Remington 700 5R.
Now shooting around 1/2 to a 1/3 MOA out to 600 yards.
I have worked the loads and it seems that a .308 is pretty much a 600 yard gun at our elevations here in Florida and I am sure the humidity is sure not helping either.
After seeing what does reach out to the 1000 yard line and has 1/4 MOA ability as well it would seem that 6.5mm is the way to go.
It appears from the figures I am losing nothing from the .308 with this change.
I have looked at maybe a Savage target action and building a "budget" target gun based on that but have spoken to the guys up at G.A.Precision about truing/blueprinting the Remington 5R action and fitting one of their barrels and this would seem to be the most cost effective route to go.
What I would like to know is their any Remington gunsmith in Florida that does work to the level of G.A.Precision that you would recommend?

AND
If you think I might be missing something please chime in with any ideas... /:f

Not to burst your bubble but if you think a .308 just dies at 600 yards you are terribly misinformed. Not to take anything away from the 6.5 or any other caliber but .308 is quite viable out to 1,000 yards. The barrel you choose will be the best money you can spend over any other modification.

I hear you Moe.
It just seems that the 175 grn rounds are becoming transonic way below the 880/920 yard distance that less "dense" atmospheric conditions allow.
I also load with 168 grn and 155 grn as well.
I have a M1a and a Savage 110FP along with the 5R all in 308 and enjoy the rounds capability.

Maybe I should have phrased my post a little better.
I want to re-chamber my 5R for 6.5mm and have the action trued along with the new barrel.
Are their any Remington specializing gunsmiths in Florida that anyone could recommend?

George at GAP is excellent, you can't go wrong with him. A little closer to home though is American Precision Arms in Ga.,formerly Patriot Arms.http://www.americanprecisionarms.com They are top notch, and that is an understatement.Jered will do you right. Then there is another top rifle builder out of Hephzibah, Ga. Robert at Gradous Rifles.
http://www.gradousrifles.com. One of the top builders to be found.

I can not reccomend anyone in Florida with as much skill and spot on customer service as the above though sadly.

+1 for GAP.

I have a rifle that Matt Hoch at GAP assembled. (everything except bedding in the stock). I would love to pick up another one completely built by them one day.

Mainly much better ballistics..
I had a 6.5 while I was in Europe and really enjoyed it.
Couple that with...
Less wind drift.
Less drop.
Less recoil.
Big jump in 1000 yard energy.
I can re-neck 308 brass I have in good amounts to .260/6.5 to reload with.
The .260 Remington blows .308 out of the water.
It has 35% less wind drift and about 10 MOA less drop at 1000 yards than the standard 175-grain M118LR load.
Despite a 35-grain deficiency in bullet mass, it has 31% more energy because it loses less along the way due to atmospheric drag, hitting 350 fps faster at 1000 yards....
The beauty of .260 is that it is a drop-in replacement in .308 rifles, providing a dramatic ballistic upgrade with only a barrel change.
Since it is based on the .308 case, .260 cases can be formed easily by necking down .308 cases.
Bolt-face size, feeding, and magazines are not affected.
Screw a new barrel on your action, and you are ready to go.

Once again I will ask 6.5 x?
6.5x39, 6.5x47, 6.5x50, 6.5x51, 6.5x52, 6.5x55, 6.5x57, 6.5x1.5, 6.5 Grendel, 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5TCU, and more that have not been mentioned.
Which one?
What weight bullets do you want to throw thru that new 6.5? What twist do you plan on for it? SS or CM? Button, broach, poly? How many groove? 3, 4, 5, 6, 8?

What do you plan to use it for? Hunting, paper punching, varmints, sniping?

How many round have you put thru your 5R? handloads or factory? Is it a stainless fluted one? 26 inch? If you go with something in 6.5 wanna sell it for the price of a used barrel? After all it will be nothing more than a tomato steak once you go to 6.5x?

Your initial post read to me as "Why 6.5" hence my answering post to that affect.

Which one?

260 Remington Ackley Improved is looking most likely at the moment.

142-grain match or VLD type bullets from Sierra, Lapua, or Berger as a starting point.
Twist to be determined.
SS.
Most likely to be a Bartlein barrel and have not yet determined number of groves.

Big Bore Lover wrote:What do you plan to use it for? Hunting, paper punching, varmints, sniping?

Target.

At the moment the plan would be to have my 5R barrel threaded for my Savage 110FP. #-o
But.
If after a proving period with the modified Remington I decide to sell it I will offer it up here first.

Thanks for all the questions. One of the reasons I want to find solid company's to ask these questions of, though Florida does seem to lack any, is to hear their answers to some of the above.
I have spoken to the guys at GAP and at the moment they have a four month lead in time.
So plenty of time to make my mind up if I do not find someone who can carry out the work at a shorter time frame.

Good afternoon to all members. I'm new here, so please forgive me in advanced if this post breaks any rules. I see this post is rather old, but I'm posting a reply to let you all know that there is a rifle smith in Florida that works only on the Remington 700 platform, and any action based on the 700s foot print. He deals only with the best stocks, barrels, actions, and optics. Uses the best procedures when it comes to action truing, barrel chambering, bedding jobs, ect. Lead time vary depending on what is ordered in a custom rifle. Stocks and barrels are kept on hand for those that don't want to wait 6 months to a year. If you have all the parts for your build, turn around time may be within a couple of weeks. The quality of the work is up there with the most famous names in the business. Great customer service, great quality work, and accuracy guarantee of 1/2 MOA or better. There's a lot more, just give him a call. You can also make an appointment to visit the shop and see for your self. Contact through www.suareztacticalrifles.com

In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.
