ooh, that's bad.

but it's funny!

Seriously, nice wood. I like the color. Care to discuss the process/materials? Did you clean it up at all (sanding, etc.)?

-sprayed oven cleaner on the wood...let sit for an hour
-used powerwasher at local coin op car wash to clean up wood more
-sanded with 600 grit
-let dry
(wood was VERY light after this step)
LIGHTLY stained with Minwax red mahogony (the wood soaked it up like a sponge and got dark quick)
-let dry
-three coats of minwax quick dry satin polyurethene with light 600 grit sanding between coats

when that was dry I painted the metal with duplicolor low gloss black engine enamel...4-5 coats

Thanks for the compliments guys.

Awesome! I didn't notice the metal at first, but there was something 'better' about the second photos I couldn't tell. Good work, all around.

When I did my AK stock, I used #0000 steel wool between coats to smooth up the wood really nice.

No idea...I think they pretty much all act as a strong degreaser.

on a lot of the C & R forums guys talk about using oven cleaner ( Ez off ) to remove cosmo, grease, dirt & grime....some say it breaks down the fibers in the wood over time, I have done this to a few rifles that were heavily caked in cosmo and they came out really nice......some of the heavy C & R collectors will argue to the death about how this ruins historical firearms, while I do hate anyone who sporterizes or bubba's a fine firearm, I don't think cleaning it this way does as much damage as some lead you to believe.....it works too well to be bad =:bye

if you check out www.surplusrifle.com I think there is a how to .

The last time I got a rifle completely caked in grease or cosmoline it was an Ishapore .308. I used a product called Simple Green and it took all of it out and was not harful at all to the metal or wood.

don't try that with your AR...Simple Green will corrode aluminum [-X

Speed_racer bought it when I picked up a PTR 91. I shouldn't have sold it. ](*,)
