AR Quad Rails

Postby Gregh181 » Sat Dec 31, 2011 6:30 pm

I just recently bough a Stag Arms Model 8 Gas Piston Carbine and I have a UTG Quad rail I was using before on another rifle. Now I know UTG is pretty bottom of the barrel in price and quality but after using it I never had any problems. However looking at a Troy Battle Rail for the rifle I can't seem to justify spending over a $100 on a quad rail. Is there really that big a difference in quality and fitting?

Not always. Sometimes the cheapie stuff is just as good as the more expensive, but without the name. If your UTG has good fit and finish, use it.

The UTG quad rail i had worked just fine. It is built very well and you get next to ZERO heat transfer through them from the barrel. Alot of the other rails with all the fancy ports and stuff just seem to heat up your hand because of how close you actually are to the barrel. The UTG seemed to keep a pretty good distance from the barrel.

I've looked a lot into a daniel defense omega free float handguard. Cost is around $300 which is pretty steep. Anyone own one or have any experience with using one? I've never free floated an AR before but an uninterrupted rail does sound good along with the slimmer grip it says it provides similar to regular AR handguards.

I have the omega in rifle length, I think it was just over $300 but I like it, I also have the YHM lightweight ( about $160 ) and I love that look, the diamond series was about the same but I have it covered in ladder covers , most folks pick something they like the look of.......you should check out the YHM line

Being new to piston AR's myself, the DD rail does have a top cover that comes off so I could clean the piston, that's definitely something that sounds like it make cleaning it a hell of a lot easier than taking off the whole rail to clean the piston.

Rent, would you say the Omega is any different in size than any other rail? DD spouts off that their slimmer like regular handguards. Also how is it trying to install these? It sounds like being two pieces the DD is pretty easy, while the YHM looks like it takes some more time for an install.

they all seem to be a bout the same, I do think the cheaper like the UTG HG's seem a lot larger in diameter

I forgot all about the pistol, it would be a PITA to remove a free float, maybe look at some of the YHM 2 piece

Seems like the DD Omega is looking better at least for my piston AR. The removable top piece for cleaning and the free floating rail are making it more attractive.

My utg felt a lot sturdier then some of my more expensive rails. I've had 0 problems with it. Locked on tight. [smilie=pdt_xtremez_30.gif]

So I actually ended up getting a YHM diamond quad rail made for piston carbines. Turns out my UTG wouldn't fit on my new Stag piston, not a big deal really. The YHM is really nice, very light and definitely worth the extra $$$ for the quality of it.

It depends. I have a Troy TRX Extreme and all it takes to remove is unscrewing two hex keys.
