Well, it served its purpose when it was needed. I carried a suppressed .22 during a lot of my deployment.

The correct answer is the cartridge and firearm combination you are most comfortable carrying, and that you can consistently deliver combat accurate hits with to stop a deadly threat.
If for you that's a Beretta 22 LR that's the best, If it's a S&W 500 Magnum, then that's the best.

No one wins with missed shots using a bigger bullet. A person intending to do you harm won't stop when he realizes you just missed him with a 45ACP, but a pair of 9mm rounds to center mass will certainly get his attention.
