Correct me if i am wrong :
RTF2- G17, G22, G29, G23
Gen4- G17, G22
Gen3- all other
Are they going to abandon Gen3 altogether?
Are they going to switch all the models to Gen4?

There have been RTF2 variants of the following models: G17, G19, G21SF, G22, G23

There are G17, G19, and G22 Gen 4s currently available. Someone on GT has a Gen4 G31. G23 will be the next released. 357 Sig/45 GAP models are forthcoming.

Regarding the Gen3 to Gen4 timeline and when Gen3s will disappear, I haven't seen anything credible on that yet. Mostly speculation. I'd imagine the transition will take awhile.

RTF2 = G19/23/17/22/21 (Originally came with crescent serrations and now they are back to being straight serrations)
Gen4 = G17/G22/G19/G31 (The G37 has a Gen4, but only in a 2000 unit special run for FHP. And the G23 should be dropping in the next month or so)
Gen3 = All others

Eventually they say that they plan on discontinuing the Gen3 RTF, but I believe that to be a while out, since they are still producing both Gen3 and Gen4 currently, and not many Gen4's are currently in production or even scheduled for release this year.

No one really knows if they will Gen4 all models, alot of people hope so, but then again, alot of people hope not... Glock is super secretive about everything they do.

Here is the next clue they packed in my new Gen4 G19

Everyone wants the Gen 4 34. When they show up commercially, I'm ordering 20.

I'm surprised the 45GAP pistols are still going to be around.
I would have thought they were selling about as well as STD these days.

Actually, the GAP is one of the fastest growing calibers out right now. Pretty good considering that only Glock sells them. They are outselling 10mm, 357sig, and several other calibers...and are on the way to outsell the .40sw in the Law Enforcement world. 5 large State Police are now using them, as well as dozens of other locals. How may State police do you see carrying a .45acp, .357sig, 10mm, etc....

The price is not an issue, and Glock is not giving these away at any cheaper than any of there other guns to Law Enforcement. However, they are blowing them out to civilians for under $400 to get them in the hands of shooters, which results in higher demands and popularity. Glock will not abandon this caliber, and they know how to market guns.

Can someone explain the point of the 45 GAP? I looked at the ballistics in some of the reloading manuals and it appears that
its nothing more that a 45 ACP that cant really perform well with bullets over 200gr. 200 and under the numbers are ALMOST the same.......

45 ACP---Bullseye---- 5.8gr--934fps

45 GAP---Bullseye---- 5.4gr---943fps

This is from Alliant, they dont even show data for anything cver 200 gr in the GAP round.
Was/Is this just a "we have our name on it" type thing?

Edited to ad.... After further study a interesting fact has emerged. The above numbers while seeming similar are not! It appears that the GAP load above aquires its 943fps with pressures that are considered to be +P in a ACP round....shorter case , higher pressure , light bullets only.....not good gentlemen!
A 45ACP round with the same bullet loaded to similar +P pressures result in about 1040 fps.

45GAP was designed to address overpenetration issues that can arise with 45acp pistols.

If you remember right a lighter, higher velocity bullet actually has lower penetration in the desired target due to more rapid bullet deformation....this is the same strategy here, it's designed to dump energy faster than the 45acp it was designed around.

so basically 45 GAP is a 45 ACP with higher cost, more muzzle flash, more recoil, and more noise?

If i had to guess, and its only a guess, I would surmise that in the beginning the GAP round was intended to be marketed to a fairly narrow market in the hopes of it gaining popularity over time , which it has done! Its a good round for someone whos not really into reloading but wants a 45 with a faster , lighter bullet.

I haven't tried this but I'd imagine that because the round is shorter - it will not headspace properly.

It's not like shooting 38's out of a 357.

No.

1) 45ACP headspaces off the case mouth. As such, the shorter 45GAP will HS off the extractor/case rim which will be an issue (see 2)
2) The rebated rim of the GAP is different size and thickness than the ACP
3) Pressures for the GAP max at higher than 45ACP. Commercial loading vary from lightly under to slightly over 45ACP +P.
4) Small primer on the GAP
