Am I nuts!!!...thinking of going short.

So...I love my remmy 700 but frankly Ihave become bored of it and havent really shot it much this last year. I hope to have a can in the future and was thinking of getting something I could use on most of my centerfires. This would require the barrel to be threaded. I figured, heck while Im down there, why not take a few inches off. The gun is a 5r milspec with a 24inch barrel. I was thinking of going down to 18-20. Figured it would take off some weight, make it more manageable when I do take it out to the field, and not be so long with the can on it. My father-in-law has an 18 inch barrel on his .308 AR and the accuracy is fine for the distances we generally shoot (less then 500 yards).

Any cons? Pros? BREAK OUT THE SAW???

Hey, chop it off and call it a LTR!

(Light Tactical Rifle)

That would make it a lot more manageable with a can on it.

There was a guy shooting a can on a rifle at Butner on Sunday. The can cost him 2 MOA at 1,000 yards. And it was QUIET!! I'm not sure what caliber it was.

Recrown it after you shorten the barrel.

Can one really think the f.shooter wouldn't recrown after chopping it down! Come on now, you put a condom on before you hit an undesirable, no? /:f [smilie=011.gif] [smilie=021.gif] [smilie=012.gif] [smilie=cheers1.gif] :ham'r =D> =:bye :ber =:e _:

an 18 inch barrel gets to 1K for sure, but it does make it a weeeeee bit more difficult.

Your pro's are ease of handling, and less fatigue, cons being a substantial loss in velocity. Figuring about 25 fps per inch, your looking roughly (very rough!) at about 150 fps.

5R's tend to be a bit faster than standard Remmy barrels, so you would more than likely make out better velocity wise. Of course a shorter tube is generally more accurate, too.

You should do it, and post pix.
