Norinco SKS - ID AK Mag Conversion

Postby groesbeck » Fri Feb 17, 2012 2:09 pm

I've found an SKS I like and I've been looking at them for a few months. It's a Norinco and takes AK Magazines.

1) How do I tell if it was an AK Mag conversion or if it was manufactured that way originally?

2) If it's not a conversion, does that make this rifle a type D or type M? It does not have a thumbhole stock. It does have a bayonet.

Before I get this thing what should I look for?

It's expensive and I like it, but I don't want to get ripped off. I know the prices went up there for a while.

Thanks....

The D model is more rare than the M model, however the D is the only one that would have a bayo and possibly a non thumbhole, is it a montecarlo stlye stock ???

The only other way is to look for a metal insert in the mag well, I can get you some pics of the difference but not till tomorrow, you can also search sksboards if you need info ASAP

Thanks for the input. I've done some looking on the sks boards as well and there is a lot of information. Problem I'm having is with the different variants made over the decades that I'm having trouble making a positive ID. I should have taken pictures myself.

This is the most comprehensive web sight I have found for the SKS.

why not, go back and snap some pics [smilie=pdt_xtremez_30.gif] , I have taken pics and posted to SKS boards while sitting in the parking lot of the gun show, trying to make a decision to grab a certain gun based on an arsenal code or pass.....no gun shop has ever questioned it.....I found a rare Chinese SKS marked " Six Corps " once, no one on SKS boards had ever heard of it, I went back and bought it and found out that only a few of them were ever imported
