Need a little help

Postby Dry Swamp » Sun Apr 24, 2011 9:22 pm

I have a Remington VS .223 in a B&C A5 with a Millet 4-16 x 56

I can not for the life of me get consistent groups with this setup...

I could shoot sub MOA with the original HS Precision stock and a VX-1 3-9 x 40 all day long.

What am i doing wrong? Suggestions? Do I need to get it bedded?

I tried to add a few upgrades and end up with worse performance... What gives?

Thanks guys!

Didn't change ammunition, did you?

First thing I would check is the physical mounting of the scope; ensure that the scope cannot move side-to-side, or back and forth on its mount.

If the scope appears to be mounted properly, next is parallax. You didn't mention what range you were shooting at, and I'm not familiar with the type of scope that you are using, but it is possible that parallax is screwing with you. To determine if there is a parallax error at a given distance, establish a solid cheek-weld on the rifle, bring the crosshairs on target, then slowly move your head left, right, forward and back. If the crosshairs appear to move, you are experiencing parallax error. Unless there is a parallax adjustment on the scope, no way around it, aside from ensuring a consistent cheek-weld from shot to shot.

Not familiar with the A5 stock, but I would certainly check for fitment. Make sure the barrel is free-floating, make sure that nothing is physically binding when you assemble the stock to the rifle.

I'm sure others will be along to help, just wanted to give you *something* to get you started.

Shooting Winchester white box 55 gr. For both setups.

100 yards.

When I installed the new stock, the main bolt binded the action to wher it would not open. I had to shorten the bolt to make it function properly. I can run a folded dollar bill between the barrel and the stock all the way up to the action.

Here is the scope: http://www.millettsights.com/scopes/buck%2Dgold/

I'll check on the parallax tomorrow. Thanks for the tips!

Simply and obvious but still worth checking .... is the barrel touching anywhere on the stock, if it is that will change your harmonics.

Dry,
First thing I would do is change ammunition, that walmart stuff is ok for plinking, but if you are serious about precision, have to use better ammunition.

On the subject of parallax, +1 to what Proj App said, except, when chking parallax, don't touch the rifle. Set it up, aim it at the target, set the side focus/parallax to the distance you are shooting. Then without touching the rifle, look thru the scope, moving your head back and forth. If parallax is set correctly, no matter which way you move your head, the crosshairs(sight picture) should not move from the point that you initially aimed it at. If it does move around, then you have a parallax issue, and you need to make an adjustment to correct.

I have that A-5 stock and love it, even though it is a bit heavy. I use mine in F-class matches and it is very stable.

Let us know if it works out.

Let me get this straight. It was originally shooting great, then you changed the stock and scope but kept the same ammo and now it won't shoot.

Start with the process of elimination. The easiest to eliminate is the stock. Toss the old stock back on and see if the groups tighten up. If that doesn't work, start suspecting that Millet scope or mounts.

It sounds like your stock. If you are using the same bottom metal, there should be no reason to have to shorten your action bolts. Does your ejection port line up flush with your stock cut out, also does your factory bottom metal sit flush ?

I won't get into scopes, since that is a long read, but this is my take on Millet.... [smilie=pdt_xtremez_12.gif]

When you changed stocks, did you torque the stock to factory specs? Also, take a peek at your barrel channel to ensure your barrel is actually free floating.

I bought a Bell and Carlson that needed sanding before it would allow my rifle to shoot properly.
