1K match in Georgia.

Went to a 1000yd match this past weekend in Georgia. This was a NRA registered match. This is a new range and this was their first NRA registered LR match, about 24 shooters showed up, with about 11-12 coming from Port Malabar, there were some other Fl. shooters there, but it was a good turnout.

The Florida guys did pretty well overall, I shot ok, but had a crossfire(miss) that took me out of the running. It was still a good time. The weather was cool on Saturday and cold on Sunday morning, the wind was gusting 10-20mph on Sunday. I had frost on my truck.

My rifle shot really good, it and my ammo were on, even though the barrel now has over 4k rounds thru it. I shot regular Berger match bullets on Sat, and pointed match bullets on Sunday, to see what the difference would be @1k.
On Sat, I added 19min of elevation over my 600yd zero, so 33 MOA above my 100yd zero. Sunday I shot the pointed bullets, but it was much colder than Saturday, so in the morning it was a wash in terms of adjusting elevation, but as the day warmed up, I ended up taking off 1moa of elevation to compensate for the pointed bullets.

It was interesting shooting in the wind, one minute you would be around the 10 ring, next you would blow a shot out the left or right or high into the 8 ring. The wind was forecast at 10-20 mph on Sunday, out of the NE, this range faces S, so you had to pay attention to the wind.

At 1k a .308 gets blown around quite a bit, but it was still fun, we had a couple of .223 shooters and they were able to reach out on touch the target, but not score well. I think they were using 80gr Berger VLD's, but they were getting out there.

I didnt get a chance to take pics this time around, but will try to remember for the next time.

The range is in Swainsboro, Ga, just under 6hrs drive from Brevard county and they have a website with the upcoming events listed if anyone is interested. Getting to this match was a lot easier than going to NC, there are decent hotels nearby with good rates. It's called http://www.coolacressportingcamp.com/. I will definitely be going back if they have any more upcoming matches.

Great report, glad you shot well.

Due to work commitments I havent shot at all in the UK this year #-o my little 6mmBR loves 1000 yards as long as its not to windy.

Those .223 guys are nuts for even trying with those wind speeds, almost wasting ammo IMHO.

Hi Nic,
Thx. In regards to the .223 shooters, that was all they(she) had. Interestingly when it was cold, her bullets were keyholing, but as it warmed up, they straightened out and she kept most of them in the black. Not bad for a .223. I would like to stretch the legs on the .260 that i built to 1k one day.

"headshots on prairie dogs at 1000yds" but I bet his spotter walks him in on those fuzzy little targets!

Steve, you must drive like a bat outa hell - that range looks like 4 hours from North Florida!
When do I get some stimulation in this economy??

Dave,
No speeding at all, it was under 6hrs each way, with pit stops. If I remember correctly, to the hotel was 370ish miles from Palm bay and the range was about 15 min away from the hotel in Swainsboro.

As someone who has put thousands of rounds down my bolt action .223's and has shot rabbits out to nearly 500 yards I call B/S on 1000 yard 'headshots' on Praire dogs with a .223, unless you saying one in 50 shots are headshots that is. Think about it the 'F' Class National Champions only shoot 5" groups with super guns, in wildcat calibres.
