Not an american made one, no. You can often find Norinco and Polytechs for about $800 but will eventually have to replace the bolt as its softer steel than american ones

Just be on the lookout for a nice used one. Since Nov I've seen a few springfield M1As go for $850-1000 on a few sites. Check AR15.com. Mags are cheaper than they were now that the Koreans are making them. But ammo's still expensive so the good news is they are nowhere near shot out. I was interested in one back when they were cheap, but the price quickly went over $1000 when I could pick up a FAL parts kit, receiver, and compliance parts for $500 or so and assemble it myself. FAL mags were also around $5 each back then, and M1A mags were around $40-50. Unless you're set on a M1A, check out the FAL, AR10, and PTR91/HK91 style rifles. They'll all get the job done, and most of them are still less expensive than a M1A and more parts are available cheaply.

If you go to the southside of lakeland I'm sure you could find one for about $300-$400...

On a serious note Nonconformist is about right on. Poly's are good rifles though. Quite a few custom M1A/M14S's are built of Poly receivers.

M14 clones are pricey.... someone even mentioned Beretta BM-59s. Even more money. Also mags are harder to find. Best bet is look for someone that needs cash ASAP and lowball them. Yeah, it's dirty and underhanded. But if they need cash and you have it; they'll take it.

I'm seeing M1As in decent shape all day on Gunbroker for @1450$$...

I guess it's a mind over matter situation.(If you don't mind, it don't matter)

If you want to shop around, wait, dicker, and settle for a beat up stock, you

can probably find one for about 500$ in eight months or so.

If you're in a hurry, I'd just pay the freight and be done with it. :-k

Often the dealers here have standard models for around $1200, ya have to look, but the best bet will be a Norinco/Polytech which are good guns, even a better receiver than Springfields

If you can swing it, get a receiver, it's well within you price range.
Save for a parts kit and get a decent M14 Plumber to assemble it.
It'll be a phase-in project as you afford it.
But for a one-time cost, you can get a fully guaranteed base Springfield M1A and excellent customer support to go with it.
"You can pay me know, or pay me later"

There are no cheap M-14's/M1A's and in most cases, you can't just snap them together like an AR.

An assembled upper with a head-spaced bolt/operating rod would be a little easier since it's then basically a drop in to stock and snap in the trigger assembly.

That's how this got started:

^^^This.^^^

Not under $1000, but certainly the least painful-on-the-wallet way to go.

Buy an LRB receiver. Make a list of all the parts in an M14 parts kit, then start shopping for them one at a time or in kit form. Hang out on m14tfl.com and gather knowledge re: parts and armorers.

Or, think about one $50 bill per bi-weekly paycheck, rolled up and stuck inside a .308 case then loaded into an M14 magazine - in a little more than a year and a half you'll have two mags each containing $1000 - your rifle will be built and you'll be shooting it within 24 months.

It took me over two years to save the money, find a cherry TRW parts kit, buy an LRB receiver, and have it built. I'm not positive, but I think I had about $1800 in it when all was said and done.

First off I have never heard of an M14/M1A mag going for $40-$50. I have shot AR10s and H&K91s, I have owned FALs of various types and two Polytech M14s. They are all fine rifles in their own right but IMO the M14/M1A is a superior weapon. ( They still use em in the current sandbox deployment with excellent results ).

I am biased a bit but being an owner of a preban SA with all USGI parts along with some Sadlak goodies ( piston, springs etc.) I see the price well worth it. Mine was $1400 bought from an older gentleman with about 200 rounds thru it. I didn't realize what a jewel I had gotten ahold of until I dug deeper into the part numbers it had. TRW bolt, op rod, Winchester trigger group. HR hammer, SA safety, H&R 1961 chromelined barrel etc.

My assessment on the following from EXPERIENCE NOT what I read:

Polytech M14s: Nice rifles, springs were weak, stocks were crap ( I replaced all of these parts) I had USGI bolts lapped in and they both shot OK but were never as accurate as the SA I have.
AR10: very heavy, bulky feel. Iron sights OK, accuracy OK. A bigger heavier AR.
HK91: Heavy feel, iron sights accuracy OK, I didn't like how felt after it came to shoulder.
FAL: I liked it the better than the others, a bit heavy, accuracy better than the other two rifles, sights pretty good. The DSA STG58 was the best of them, kinda wished I still had that one.

My M1A: Feels PERFECT when it comes to shoulder, sights are excellent, weight is just right and accuracy is excellent. I am extremely confident when I am shooting this rifle as it is well made and has never jammed or let me down during any match I have shot in.

To make things fair I did work up loads for the FALs and the Polytechs. I shot the others using match grade and surplus ammo so my personal data was unbiased. ( Kinda [smilie=011.gif] , I prefer US made weapons ).

Save your cash and buy an M1A. [smilie=cheers1.gif]
