Local south Florida agencies view on open carry

Postby flashooter22 » Thu Jan 19, 2012 9:04 pm

My agency was contacted by a representative of the Armed Citizens League, inquiring on our knowledge of Floridas "open carry" laws, as they pertain to hunting, fishing, and camping. It was insinuated that there would be multiple open carry events staged throughout the county and they just wanted to make us aware. Fortunately, my agency actually came about this in a positive light. What they did was issue a roll call training brief that not only is being addressed in all the roll calls, it also requires sign off in written form. There were certain scenarios presented and the proper responses. I was happy to see this done, as there are ALWAYS idiots that dont know, or even worse, dont care. Now everyone SHOULD have some knowledge on the subject. I hope all goes well for everyone. :ber

I thought Palm Beach was the county that "hated guns". Am I thinking about one of the cities there?

There are lots of people in our local government that feel that exact way.....both cities and county. Heck our Sheriff will not sign off on class three so believe me there is still a long way to go.

Great to see that your Dept. got some training on the current law.

Just be careful about this "Armed Citizens League" That's Todd von Bender's unregistered psudo-organization.

This is the clown that came here hawking his $20 CWFL course. He registered as armedcitizenleague and spammed us and was banned. Then Todd registered himself again as kschmitt75, the256newton, lenn, jcbackfromiraq, margarettmitchael, usmc.jdiaz and masterblaster - all supposed unrelated 3rd parties who had taken his course and came to tell us of his greatness. He even threatened to sue some of us for libel and slander. The guy is an asshole and I doubt his organization is any better.

I thought there were some sheriffs up in Hillsborough and Pinellas that hated guns too.

That is typical of big cities. I wouldn't worry about it.

If every LEO was half as conscientious and knowledgeable as you FlashShooter Some people wouldn’t have a chip on their shoulder towards LE (yes, I know "some people" is sometimes me).

I think you’re changing a lot of people’s impression of LE.

Thanks!

While we are on the subject of open carry, I have a question for you all. I have read the FL gun statutes a few times, and some 3rd party interpretations, but still get a convoluted idea of the answer. It's regarding the possession of HANDGUNS in the National Forest (Ocala).

From what I gather, you can have a handgun on you if you are hunting, fishing, or camping in FL. Then, the statutes say you can't possess a firearm in the National Forest except for hunting, during hunting season, with a license. There's additional issues regarding WMAs, too. There's some vague wording in the statutes about the firearm locked in your vehicle being OK. Does that mean I can have my handgun in the console of my truck, while in the forest during any time, even if not hunting (similar to FL gun laws allowing possession in POV without license)?

The reason is, I often work in the ONF with some expensive gear, and am responsible for this gear and my team of guys. I would like to have my handgun on me, or at least in the truck, during our operations in the ONF.

Opinions, thoughts?

Thanks!
