How my 600 dollar AR-15 is doing so far..

Postby dwkfym » Sat Sep 10, 2011 8:44 pm

Very good! I go 2-4 range sessions between cleanings.. no failures so far, except when using steel cased ammo on a hot rifle

thanks for the advice and help. if you recall, I built this rifle around July. I've been enjoying it ever since!

Are you shooting left handed, or are you sitting in front of a mirror?
But seriously, tell us how you made it for only $600.

Definitely looks left handed because there is no ejection port on the visible side.

I'm genuine left handed, with hot air and powder blowing into my other arm!

Willikers, details are on the 'other' forum but the details are also in my most recent blog entry linked at the bottom of my posts.

Basically, you spend a few hundo on a "complete" rifle kit minus lower receiver, find the cheapest hammer forged aluminum lower receiver, rear sight, magazines, and viola!
With the optic, quad rail, and accessories, my rifle cost more like 850 dollars. I got all the bells and whistles used on fl gun trader and ar15.com

We never fire our Colt M4's except for training once a year but have to clean them every week :(

The way you're hugging that mag with your support hand I would have thought a broom handle would have been part of your plans. No offense, just noticing how close your hand is to the ejection port and sometimes mag gripping can lead to feed issues. To each his own though!

rangerryda,
I appreciate the tips. I have been very careful not to put my thumb or hand too near the ejection port. My arms are a bit short and its a bit of a strain to get my hand on the foreend. Maybe I'm just being a $i$$y. My old man was ROK army for 25 years ish, so I grew up watching guys like this:

Apparently they teach both support hand on the magwell and support hand to the front grip area. But I guess different rifle, different feeding issues too. Do you think its very necessary to fix where my support hand goes?

It really all comes down to how reliable the weapon is and how accurate you are. If you are comfortable shooting upside down with railroad spikes up your nose, by all means do it! lol BUT, to eliminate possible issues I'd recommend staying away from the mag itself with your support hand. The mag well is just fine to use since it's part of the receiver. The military and police training I've received (modern) says to keep from being near the ejection port and magazine for safety and reliability. Just remember that those teachings are for effective engagements of live targets, not paper at the range having fun so there is no "wrong" way to shoot a rifle if you hit your target every time :)

Another suggestion is getting a simple sling. When adjusted to the correct length, it can be support wrapped around your support arm/elbow so it creates what feels like a triangle support under the front of the weapon. I use this method when firing M1's, M14's, AK's, K98's, and pretty much any other heavy/long barreled rifle. The more modern polymer/carbon/aluminum weapons aren't nearly as heavy and don't require such tactics but when you load down an M4 with all of our duty equipment, you'd be surprised how heavy it feels when supporting it for a couple mags worth of shooting.

All of this is just input, take what you like and disregard what you don't. It's your gun, your ammo, your time, and your money so have the most fun you can! Shoot safe.

Good advice about not putting pressure on the mag, itself.
Awhile back, I had a left elbow injury that prevented supporting a rifle in the usual, forward position.
And my usually very reliable shootin' iron starting jamming like crazy.
Finally figured out that I was pushing slightly backward on the mag, causing rounds to tip down and not feeding.
Quit doing that pronto.

not to one-up, but one of these days I'll share details about my last AR build. Total cost: $355.00 (no, that's not a typo) [smilie=pdt_xtremez_13.gif]

I have a K1A1 (paratrooper version with collapsible, not folding stock). LOVE it, SO accurate and easy to shoot.

Personally, it should fire everything that you stuff in it so in other words your rifle is failing. While you may not want to clean the whole rifle each trip you should at least clean the bore if your having issues.

Does your AR fire steel cased ammo on a hot chamber reliably?

I grip my magwell also on both AR that I have. For me it is more comfortable than having my arm sretched out on the for end. Sometimes when I am moving & shooting my hand has slipped down onto the magazine and causes a malfunction. So to combat that problem I install a magwell grip. They are about $25 and they work really well.
