Help Me Decide On A semi auto .308 bug out rifle

Postby SGAL1 » Tue Mar 22, 2011 2:48 pm

Before I go out and buy one of these at some dealer...I thought I might give the forum a try first.
Many years ago, when my boys were young...I made the stupid mistake of selling my H&K 91 and I've been kicking myself for doing so.
I know there are other quality semi-auto rifles out there also so I'm going to open this up to you all and see what's out there.
If I had my preference I would love to find another H&K but I know they are going for a ton of $$ now.
I'm not very interested in the .223 caliber because I'm covered there.
What I'm looking for is a good quality WTSHTF bug out rifle I can throw in my safe...preferably in a .308 or similar.
A PSL might work....so I'm just going to get this started and see if anyone out there has something along this lines they might be willing to sell for a reasonable price."Otherwise i'll just go buy something new."
I have cash ready to go so hopefully someone within a reasonable driving distance is looking for a buyer because I'm not really interested in having something shipped. I hope I covered everything. ....anyone out there have something like this they want to sell?
Thanks for looking... :ber

FAL or CETME, but the weight and weight of the ammo are a huge consideration for bugging out

also pretty hard to hide discretely ( meaning will not fit in a tennis racquet case )
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

Paratrooper FAL might be a good thing to look for.

Not necessarily looking for something compact...but I would like to see what is out there before I just go buy something new.
I used to hunt mule deer with my H&K 91 all over Colorado and the weight didn't bother me.
That's when I fell in love with that gun.
I think if I buy something new...I'll just spring for a used H&K or a clone of that sort.
I have also always loved the PSL's so I wanted to throw that in there also...but I would prefer a .308
Hope that helps. Thanks for your input so far everyone.

I have an old fal that I could sell. Beat up and ugly - but runs like a top. Cheap.

I don't have it here in Brevard, but I could in a few weeks.
When do I get some stimulation in this economy??

Seems like there are a lot of Mfg's producing .308 AR right now. I've own(ed) several DMPS LR-308 variants and they've all been good, reliable shooters. The DPMS AP4 is a .308 M4gery and offers a lot of power out of a small package.

If size is a major factor consider the Vector V51 pistol. You could also consider the Draco AK pistol in 7.62x39.

It's hard to beat the FAL for ruggedness and reliability, but most of them are not as accurate as an AR-10 or M1A1. The FAL will have the advantage in magazine availability, and they are dirt cheap. The AR-10 mags have come down in price, but are still 2-3 times more $ than FAL mags. The M1A1 mags are pretty expensive, when you can find them. The AR is easier to scope and accesorize, but you can scope a FAL fairly easily too. I've owned them all, and the FAL is the one I liked the most for a MBR. I have a DSA SA-58 carbine now, and will be getting a para kit for it soon, and probably an Elcan or Eotech for optics.

I went with a DPMS LR308 and am happy with it. I have a Super Sniper scope up top and a Burris Fast Fire at 1 oclock. It's heavy though, even in a carbine configuration, and ammo of course weighs a ton. I'm more likely to grab the 5.56 SBR with the can on it.

I've been looking at the DPMS set up also.
It's good to hear some positive feedback. I was wondering if folks were happy with those.
Thanks for your input on that.

Nice thing about the DPMS configuration vs. the Armalite is that you can get Magpul PMags for the DPMS. I love me some Pmags.

IMO the best two I can think of are the PWS MK214 (or MK216) 308 piston guns extremely reliable little maintenance and the new Keltech 308 Bullpup.

PWS MK2-page; http://primaryweapons.com/store/pc/view ... ategory=25

They are not cheap but compared to the REPR they are.

I also like the MiA scout but does not have the versatility of the mentioned two which have the capacity for various quick mounts optics and accessories and the scout is heavier.

I just received a PWS MK114 (223) and it is the best firearm I have ever owned a real bug out gun if I was taking only one this one is it.

A bastardized AR piston design over battle proven designs like the FAL and M1A ? Good luck finding spare parts when the SHTF for that PWS.

This has turned into more of a "help me decide what I want to buy" than an "I want to buy X" thread so it's getting moved to the tech forums and relabeled.

OP, when you're ready to buy "X" put your ad up again.
