Full Auto Manual for 10/22 Question

Postby Osmosis » Wed Feb 01, 2012 9:00 pm

I saw an add that piqued my curiosity on another site. The add was for a Ruger 10/22 with "lots of extras". One of the extras was a "Full Auto Instruction Booklet (all ATF rules apply)". My questions are many but first understand I have no need or desire to own or possess automatic weapons also if someone here placed the add I am not calling you out or trying to start any crap. I am just curious and quite ignorant regarding the legal ramifications and rules concerning the possession and distribution of this type of publication. It is not that often you see something like that for sale on a public forum and as I said it piqued my curiosity. I thought that the book itself was a Title 2 or NFA item.

Thanks in advance for the education. That is something I can always count on from the membership here and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn more about the hobby we all share.

So far, knowledge in itself is not regulated by federal or state law, and thus books are not controlled items. So yes, that book remains legal to buy or own.

Now, if you happened to find yourself on ATF's hit list, they would have no case if you owned only a 10/22 and a bunch of tools ... But if you also owned the conversion manual, and did something stupid like posted on the Internet that you had just bought the manual and planned to use it to convert your 10/22 ... Then you might find yourself in need of an attorney.

Legal, registered MGs are my personal favorite subject, and over many years of examining them, I've learned how close they are to their semiauto counterparts. (In fact, most of the "conversion manuals" are wildly inaccurate, and would result in a gun which would either be unsafe, or would not function at all.) however, because it has been illegal under federal law to make new machine guns since May 19, 1986, these manuals serve no purpose other than as "jail bait" to create probable cause for search warrants.

Your Mileage May Vary.

Scott and Sweep have a bunch of really sweet guns. If you've ever wanted to shoot full-auto this is the place to do it (just make sure you bring alot of ammo). They'll let you shoot just about everything they've got as long as you feed it. I love the full auto 10-22, but the AK, AR, and beltfed MGs they have are alot of fun too. I can't wait to try their new full-auto Saiga 12 this time around. I usually bring about 10 or so of my own guns, but always find myself loading more or my mags into their guns since they're much more fun to shoot.

Plus it's a great place to meet the members of the forum.

regardless of the legality, don't get suckered into paying any money for these repeatedly xeroxed copies of conversion instructions and receiver blueprints. You can download them from the internet for free.

I am not a gunsmith or machinist but the steps and measurements in the instructions seem detailed enough to make me think someone with the right tools and skill could follow them to remove the right parts, modify existing parts and build the additional parts required. Does that mean these are safe, legal or create the intended result.....no freaking clue. Just saying it is not just a couple grainy pictures but 20some pages of material giving it slightly more credibility but hardly any guarantee. YMMV.

we've already asked, as per the mods, we can't post the material on here. I am certain you can find it on the net. we have heard that a lot of people upload all kinds of manuals to scripdb or dump entire pdf collections on sites similar to megaupload(rip) or put them up as torrents.
