Form 4 wait times.... (updated)

Postby False Prophet » Fri Jul 24, 2009 2:05 am

Man, this is getting frustrating already. My form 4 was received on March 21st and here we are over 4 months later and it's still pending. [smilie=014.gif]

Here is the timeline so far....

Received: March 21
Check cashed: March 27
Pending: May 1
Examiner: Sandra Snook

Just a heads up of what to expect for those getting ready to submit a form 4. ](*,)

I sent in my form for an AOW around April 10 or so and the approved form came back approximately 2 weeks ago or so. Dealer mentioned it was fairly quick but likely because I already had two stamps on my Trust already.

I don't know if it's the examiner or not but I've heard from one other person that Sandra Snook is slow(er).

Wow, that IS slow...especially for a trust. Four months is reportedly the average right now for a trust.

They probably read the forum and figure anyone twisted enough to have the photo library you do must be a criminal. They just haven't found it in your background check...yet. Not to worry, some suit will soon be "discovering" the drugs in your home while your at work.

But seriously, that's sloooowwwww. Seen this website:

OK, now I'm really pissed. I found out there was a problem with the serial numbers not matching. The examiner sent a letter to the dealer asking to clarify the problem. The dealer informed me that I'm going to have to resubmit the form 4 and wait another 4 months because SWR screwed up and sent the wrong can???

If your dealer politely asks ATF, you can mail the revised Form 4 directly to the NFA examiner.

I did that last month -- actually, it was a change of transferee -- and the replacement Form 4 was approved the same day USPS delivered it in W.Va.

Thanks Tony, I'm going to ask them tomorrow to do that. Do you think that's something I can do or does the FFL have to call the examiner?

You know, for as much as we have to pay to play their game they need to hire some more damn examiners. [smilie=014.gif]

Assuming the goal of the ATF is to give you faster access to your already paid for NFA items, which based on their actions of past surely isn't the case.
Remember the multi-tools they were handing out not long ago engraved with ATF (Always Think Forfeiture)?

Does year dealer get along well with the examiner? If so, it'd be better for him to call. OTOH, some dealers hate their examiners and the feeling is mutual, and if it's one of those, better that you make the call.

Examiners have the option of doing it as an amended application, but there is no requirement that they do so. So you need to ask nicely.

At what point do you give up on your dealer calling and just call yourself?

You have to call them at (304) 616-4500. Have the serial number of the item on hand.
