Flew with a gun this weekend... turned out ok

Flew Direct Air this weekend to go see the mother in law. Nothing major happened, although whoever told me to make sure I printed out the rules for TSA AND the airline I was flying and have it with me is a genius. Two things stood out: 1) my gun was NEVER checked. All they did was make me sign something stating it was unloaded. Never even opened up my suitcase to look to see if I had it in a case. :-k This was the same coming and going. Okay, weird but whatever. I actually was a little worried as I thought they made a mistake and were going to end up destroying my case to get to the gun without me there. But all was well. 2nd little hiccup was the ticket lady on the way back telling me I couldn't have ammo in the same checked bag as my pistol was in (not in the case with the pistol, but actually in the same bag as the pistol case was in). Well I whipped out my rules, told her she was misinformed... she called over a manager and I was on my merry way.

Then I got into a little arguement with a TSA dickwad that checks boarding passes/IDs... but I'll save that one for later. [smilie=011.gif]

That's been pretty much my experience. I've flown to FL, CA, AZ, NV, AL, MS, TN, OH, VA, NC, GA and MD and never had any major issues. (We'll see if I get out of CA as easily as I got in.) A little inconsistency in their procedures. Some airports will have TSA come over to see if the gun's unloaded. Some airline counters will have you put the tag in the hard case, some in the suitcase.

Jackson, MS wouldn't let me have loaded mags in a mag pouch. I know it's iffy since it isn't specifically addressed. I had to discard 16 rounds.

Had one TSA guy tell me that I had to have a TSA lock on the case. Easier to just do it the wrong way than argue over it.
...and they think I'm compensating for something?

Yeah I fly all the time and have yet to run into a problem with checking a firearm.

This had been discussed in a couple of long threads, starting with Onree's epic journey. Ammo has to be in factory packing or otherwise not touching one-another. No loaded mags.

Pretty sure I read in their (TSA) rules that the locks are NOT to be TSA locks. Don't these people know their own rules?

Firearm magazines/clips do not satisfy the packaging requirement unless they provide a complete and secure enclosure of the ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder, holster or lanyard).

It was about as secure as you can get. Very handy, but again, not worth the trouble, so I gave it up.

Pretty sure I read in their (TSA) rules that the locks are NOT to be TSA locks. Don't these people know their own rules?
