I don't know why the W.H. backed off, but they did.

Don't hold yer breath . . .

A senior defense ministry official, however, raised the possibility that the U.S. government may cancel the plan to allow the purchase the M1s, saying Seoul has yet to finalize negotiations with Washington.

``We have yet to receive confirmation from the United States over our proposal,” he said. “The U.S. government may change its position at the last minute due to political considerations.”

Somebody's getting their gun facts from FGT:

M1s were made first in 1926 and used during World War II and the Vietnam War. The carbines were first produced in 1941 and used during the 1950-1953 Korean War.

They currently sell for around $220, according to another defense ministry official.

I'll take ten of each at that price!

I think that is the going price in the international arms market.

They'll be rough, but at least will be more affordable for folks and good parts donors for others.

I think they're basing pricing off of stripped receivers from CMP O_O

Check the CMP website. Orest Michaels says definately NO! These are rifles purchased by the Koreans not part of military aid/lend lease. So they are not returns to the US government like the Danish, Greek and previous Korean rifles. They can be sold to anyone and are not ones that have to be returned to the US stocks.

I believe the only country who still has stocks of Garands is Philippines.

The GOP snuck some language into an appropriation bill, similar to what they did so Saiga shotguns can continue to be imported. Basically it defunds any action that would result in preventing these rifles from being imported.
