CMP M1 garand

Postby dan1802 » Sat Apr 23, 2011 3:17 pm

I have been wanting an M1 for a while now and im getting frustrated with all the high prices.
the CMP has service grade M1's for $500 but i heard you have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get one and that they take forever to ship it off.

is there anywhere to get a service grade M1 garand for under $600 other then the CMP ? and if not how hard is it to go through them ?

I don't think it is too big of a deal to order through CMP. I think that I have 4 or 5 through them. It does take a while after you order but that is part of the fun. Your other option is to drive there and experience the whole deal but have your ducks lined up ahead of time. (All your paper work ready) You have to join a club but there are a few that are only 20 or 30 a year.... If you drive, you can pick up ammo while you are there and you should be good to go plus you will have an opportunity to pick through all the rifles and find just the right one for you.

www.odcmp.com

They have a variety of Garands in every condition you can name from stripped receivers to all correct late production.
Do you have a, birth certificate, a CCW, ever been in the military, over 21, belong to a gun club, had a safety training course?
If you have most of the above you can run down to the Notary with your IDs and the order form. Send your credit card number to the CMP and wait about 60 days at most for the BWT to deliver to your door.
CMP makes it about as easy as can be to buy a quality Battle Rifle.
Why have you been waiting so long?

You will also need a copy of your birth certificate.

Take the drive to Anniston, it's not that far. It's on the NW side of the Talladega National Forest, which is a very pretty place. Atlanta is also within a short drive. You could easily make a weekend out of it. It's just a nice bonus that you get to pick out your own rifle while you are there!!

Most folks have the rifle shipped home to save the AL sales tax, but if you are buying ammo, most folks take the ammo with them to avoid the shipping charge.

oh and does the paperwork have to be notarized ? i think i saw a section in the paperwork for a notary to sign ?

To answer you questions, [1] yes it needs to be notarized, and [2] GCA sends it's updated membership list i believe monthly, but it sure wouldn't hurt to include a copy of the card in your packet.
