AK build dilemma

Postby outlawjoseywales » Sat Jul 23, 2011 1:28 am

1st thing, I'm the new guy-thanks for letting me join.
I'm also not any kind of AK expert, surplus bolt action and Black Powder revolvers are my normal thing.

Anyway, heres my problem and advice is certainly needed.
I have a Hungarian milled AK55 parts kit with barrel, i've had it for 12 years and just got around to doing something with it. However, it is a milled kit which is why it's a AK-55 (type III I think is how they say it) and that makes the receiver expensive.

I've got a guy who will build it for $500-600 including the milled receiver.

Should I sell the kit or get it built? I've got nothing invested in the kit. I've heard these are unusual and the kit might be worth over $200. That not alot of money, but it's also not just pocket change. If my stamped receiver with trunion would work, I would have already had it built, but I was told it won't work.

Is anyone familier with this?
If so, thanks so much for your help.

welcome fellow AK nut :ber

the AK-55 is one of the less seen variants, its kinda a copy of the Russian type III kits, just made in Hungary

as for the receiver all milled receivers are expensive, but the barrel basically screws into the receiver and basic shop tools minor filing is about all it take for fitting, you would need to refinish it as it probably comes " in the white " or raw steel.

the receiver is probable almost $ 400 and the kit alone is worth well over $ 200 so if they are gonna build it compete for even $ 600, jump on it, it would be a really nice rifle to have in the $ 600 range, if you just want money out of it, list it on gunbroker and Let it Ride to get the most of what that kit would be worth ( I 'm gussing at least $ 400 )

worst case you drop the $ 600 and have it built and can always sell it for that or more down the road. but just don't get anyone to assemble it [-X

put your location in your profile too, you might be close to one of us that could help you assemble it if you want to try it yourself

$600 for the receiver and having it built is a about the right price IMO. Here's a link to the the receiver you'd need to buy, plus all the little extras, and of course time, is probably right in the $600 range.

Rent is definately correct that your kit is worth more than $200. With the original barrel, your kit is probably worth $300-$400.

Awesome replies, thanks guys.
It's a 7.62 X 39 good ol' fashioned AK

Hey, another question.
Just read somewhere (maybe here?) that a guy ground down what was left of the milled reciever and that became his front trunion for his stamped receiver.
That sounds dangerous though. Does anybody know anything about that?

Thanks.

Don't ruin it by grinding it up to put a stamped receiver around it. When it comes to milled AKs, I feel that using an aftermarket receiver wastes it. Your front stub is the "trunion" to me, and by not using it, you lose the originality of the gun. When someone says "My Type 3 is all Russian, except receiver and 922 parts!" he's full of shit. It's a US gun with a few Russian parts. Go to AKForum, and talk to TurboThis. He rewelds receivers and they come out great, while keeping your gun as original as legally possible.
