"Brass Kisses"

Postby BadGnus » Mon Jan 18, 2010 7:27 pm

Took both FALs out for a little shooting today. I only fired 10 rounds through each but was pleased with how well they shot. Brass is striking the receivers on both as it is exiting more so on the 16in. Two questions: 1. Is this a gas adjustment fix or a an ejector tuning fix? 2. What is the best way to clean the brass streaks off the receiver?

Thanks

try bore cleaner.personally im going to start putting some gorilla tape on the area the brass hits(stickier than duct tape and not as gooey)i think it is just the nature of the beast

(1)The gas regulator will only effect how much force the brass is ejected with. The ejector on the left side of the receiver is what controlls the angle of the ejected case. You can slightly change the angle, but IMO it is not worth it. If you screw it up there is going to have to be some welding done by someone who knows what they are doing. (2)The best way to get the brass 'kiss" marks off the receiver is to use some CLP to and buff them off with a rag, or maybe a little copper solvent on it. The "kiss" marks are totally nomal on a FAL, I know they can bother you because you want to take care of your guns. If I were you I would decide which one should be my safe queen and which was going to be my shooter. Also skateboard grip tape can be placeed on by the ejection port like the duct tape method. A lot of FAL and SIG556 guys use this method.

a lot of guys use electrical tape or flexible fridge magnets on the receiver to avoid brass kisses. Easier clean up.

I've seen the tutorial on the falfiles for the ejector fix, but haven't tried it.

Thanks for the responses and advice. Never having shot a FAL, I thought this was an anomaly. But consensus says otherwise.

Just make sure you adjust your gas regulator correctly, that is the thing most new FAL shooters don't do. With only one round in the mag fire it on the most open setting until the bolt locks to the rear, then close it one more notch. I then use some paint in the number on that setting so there is no confusion. Hope that helps, if you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask.
