Boyds Nutmeg Laminate Garand stock install

Postby jmikeb653 » Tue Aug 30, 2011 6:42 pm

I took advantage of Boyds recent sale and ordered a Nutmeg laminate stock set for $115 and it arrived today. It came well-packed, all 3 pieces wrapped in foam and secured in a sturdy box. It was advertised as fully finished and it was as advertised. The only fitting i had to do was Dremel a little bit front of the stock where the stock ferrule fits. Both handguards were perfectly inletted for their hardware and everything switched over just fine. These sets do not come with any metal hardware so you must switch every thing over from the old to the new.......... takes about 15-20 minutes. The trigger group snapped in place without any sanding or fitting required and no op-rod binding either. It adds some weight to the gun compared to the original CMP-beech set, but i would think that will help control recoil anyway. Here are a few pix. Jim

Nutmeg Lam. compared to a Numrich's new walnut GI stock on my other Garand [ Which was a pain in the ass and required a couple of hours of chiseling/sanding/Dremel work to fit.... not recommended ] All-in-all a big thumbs up to Boyds for a great product at a good price.

Boyd's stock I got was pretty thick about a sixteenth inch over hang on the butt plate. Same on the lower and upper bands.
This one looks thinner.
Have you shot the new stock yet?

No, i just came home today and it was on the front porch.... the range is open this Sunday and i will take it out then. I was VERY surprised that it fit so good. After the experience i had with the Numrich's one, which didn't fit ANYWHERE.... i had to work on it to get the buttplate on, the stock ferrule, plus the front handuard heat rail groove wasn't deep enough for the rail to fit,the op-rod was binding and the bitch of it all was the magazine floor plate area was waaaay too shallow and had to be inletted about a 1/4 inch before i could snap it closed with a rubber mallet! AND as you mention the Numrich's stock was thick about a 1/16 to an 1/8 at every bbl band and buttplate..... The Boyds is much-much better.

That's great, the proof is in the shooting. A nice tight fit will reduce group size a bit.
I guess with the laminate stock you don't have any worries with oil soaking into the wood and crushing the fibers from a tight lock up with the trigger group. My old M1s i leave the trigger guard undone when I have no intent to shoot them for awhile. Takes about a clip to set back into the stock after that.

UPDATE: I shot it this past Sunday and it shoots as good as it looks, the extra weight helps reduce recoil and no splits or chips after almost 100rds downrange. Big Smile.... Jim

The gun looks even better in person Jim!! rw:
