Are Jeep's reliable?

Postby armedpolak » Fri Feb 17, 2012 11:41 am

Hi Gang!
So I think my mid life crisys is kicking in early, and I have a taste for a FAST car... Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 [smilie=011.gif]

I've also driven Japanese cars, so I have no idea how good and reliable Jeeps are... please advice!

The srt8 jeep is quick. Even quicker with some light mods. To make it FAST you're talking substantial mods.

They look and sound great!

As far as reliability I have no info, unfortunately, unless you buy a jeep with a 4.0 inline 6.

I have looked at the srt8 grand cherokees in the past and just didnt see the value personally.

My failure numbers say the tranny goes out at 80K, the differential around the same time.

Not all of them.....but a substantial portion.

A/C Evaporator is another weak point...likes to leak at 4yrs.

They have historically been at or near the bottom of the reliability barrel, along with Chrysler & Dodge. If you buy new, should be warranty and no worries for a couple years. Not sure if Jeep has a Certified Pre-Owned program, but most manufactures that offer CPO programs extend the warranty for used vehicles that meet certain criteria to become certified.

Edmunds.com has reviews, consumer discussions, and buy-sell info on most cars, new ones and used.
Their info seems accurate.
Are you thinking of buying new or used?
I was looking, just for fun, at the new Durango, which uses the same chassis and drive trains as the G. Cherokee.
Very impressive, but kind of heavy and not all that fast.
Hardly slow, mind you, but not a real speed wagon.
Big engines don't always make a fast car, if it's overweight, like most are these days.
But fast is relative and how fast do you really need to go?

I'm looking to buy NEW.

I've also looked at Dodge Durango R/T with 5.7L HEMI, but it's not even close to SRT8 performance...

I WANT A BIG, FAST SUV~!!!

EDIT TO ADD...

Basically, I want a V8 with around 400+/-50 horses SUV. Something I can pack the kids and bags in, and also something that will give me a thrill when I floor it! I'm open to other sugestions, doesn't have to be a Jeep, as long as it's fast as shit and say no more than $60,000 [smilie=011.gif]

400 HP + 6-8000 lbs doesnt really = FAST.

Quick , however, like I said, for sure.

For that kind of money you can buy a Cadillac wagon thats VERY fast for a stock street car, much less an SUV.

I think if you're looking for FAST, look elsewhere than the "suv" category.

Just earlier this week, the news had a list of the most reliable vehicles. While I've had several Mopar hot rods in the past, I'm sad to say the Dodge, & Jeep vehicles are at the bottom of the list. GARY N4KVE

The SRT8 Jeep is definitely sexy. If you don't mind used, look at a Chevy Trail Blazer SS. 395hp 6.0L LS2 and available all wheel drive in a 4900# SUV.
Why would you want to give away any of your rights or freedoms? Just because one jack wagon doesn't have an elevator worth Andre 3000 doesn't mean that I should have my privileges taken away.

as others have said, fast and SUV probably dont go together unless if you are talking serious cash.

i would buy a gmc or chevy SUV, and then do stuff like add bigger injectors, have it retuned, perhaps add a supercharger. that will make it faster if you can bring the hp up to the 5xx-6xx range.

or, if it doesnt have to be an SUV per se, or a truck or van, you can get into diesel, add huge injectors and even bigger turbochargers, and get somewhere in the neighborhood of 4 figures.

there's an unsuspecting ford van that does 11's or 12's here in orlando.

all of the SRT8 line up are nice and fast but ridiculously
priced. a friend bought an SRT8 Chrysler 300 a few yrs back
and it depreciated over $12k in the first 18 months.

There was one running at Orlando Speedworld one Wednesday night at a "run what ya brung" night. The thing, for a Jeep, was nasty . . . I think it was in the low 12's or lower. Definitely not stock, it certainly surprised me.

Same here. My family has owned a lot of 4.0 jeeps (TJ and XJ) and while they've had their issues, they were solid. Same with the 4.7 WJ my grandmother had has been pretty solid too. Anything newer than a WJ, I've got no idea on.

IMO a suv that'll run high 12's with light mods is pretty flippin fast.

For another 25k you can get a BMW X5M that'll run low 12's and not beat up your kidneys doing it.

As long as you don't ever use it

http://autos.yahoo.com/articles/autos_content_landing_pages/1556/consumer-reports-most-reliable-cars/ Consumer reports gives Chrysler corp the lowest (except Dodge Ram 1500) rating based on "actual reported problems"....
