Anyone a Garand expert near Daytona area? Cent. FL area okay

Postby One45 » Sun Nov 21, 2010 11:02 am

Well, I am getting the Garand I've been looking at this afternoon. Wondering if any fellow member who is well
acquainted with Garands would be able to give this weapon the "once-over". I'm a novice as far as Garands go
and would really appreciate anyone's help. Glad to pay for the time, too. Thanks for any consideration.

Well, no volunteers? Dang. OK. [-(

A gauge set to test TE and CE would help you out a lot.

I used to be able to field strip one and reassemble it blindfolded in less than a minute. In ROTC, you worked off dimerits by cleaning them and I got a lot of dimerits. Unfortunately, you're probably going to need someone with more technical knowledge than I have as well as somebody that lives a bit closer to you.

My one word of advice, though, it to watch out for that damned bolt. You release the bolt on a Garand by pulling back slightly on the lever with the edge of your right hand while pressing down on the follower. Let the slide move just far enough to hold the follower down and make sure your thumb is out of the way before you let the slide go. Everybody that's ever had much to do with Garands will know exactly what you're talking about if you mention M1 Thumb or Garand Thumb.

Thanks for the help, Cracker. My dad had a Garand and I learned early what Garand thumb is. Almost got it
last night; just beat the bolt - it all came back to me really quick.....
Thanks Lee.

I've got the TE and MW gauges and I'm a serious student of the M1.
Bruce Dow of Dow's Arms Room in Pasco Co is a real expert. His shop is on US301 near Dade City.

Hi P5 Guy: I just Googled Bruce and was reviewing his website. I have heard his name forever as the guru of the
Garand; among others. May run mine over there in the near future and have him go over it. Thanks much and I
just sent you a pm, too. Thanks.

+1 for Bruce Dow, great reputation and probably the best in the state for old Mil rifles.
While you're at it, there are plenty of Garand/Maintenance books available on-line/amazon.
If you have any CMP Affiliated Clubs up your way, they should have members who'd be happy to look over your Garand.
BTW: We always like Garand Pix around here!

Try contacting the CMP and go to the e-store. You don't have to be affiliated with a CMP club or it's member to order books. Try and get the operating manual they ship with every CMP Garand at least. It will cover safety and disassembly. /:f

Going to Dow Arms tomorrow. I called their shop last Friday; word fm. the gentlemen at their shop was that Mr. Dow was taking some time off
having had recent surgery. There is another gentlemen who can run-through a Garand and give all the particulars; measure the TE and MW and
write it all down just like they grade the rifles at CMP. I'll give a report after I make the visit there. Thanks for everyone's help. Also some pics.
