AP ammo at the CMP

Postby flashooter22 » Fri Jul 08, 2011 2:12 pm

Get it quick, they didnt do an annoucement which means they probably dont have a lot for sale. 200 rounds of loose AP in a .30 cal can, says US mixed headstamps for $70 a can.

My two cans were delivered today and contained the following:

Can #1
TW 45--132
RA44--1
DEN43--1
AYR (55 and 56)--73
-----------------------
total 207

Can #2

TW45--149
DEN42--1
SL53--1
AYR(55, 56)--48
--------------------
Total 199

Looks like a good portion of mine was TW45 corrosive USGI. Both cans are newer .30cals.

My cans are scheduled to arrive today, but nobody will be home to sign for them at the time that FedEx usually comes by. Tomorrow may be different. I thought about just picking the cans up, but after the FedEx guy screwed me the last time I got CMP ammo, I want him to schlep the cans to my door.

I can't believe i actually did this but here goes:
Can #1 200rds AYR 55 and AYR 56 [ Norwegian ]
Can #2 186rds AYR 55&56
1rd TW 54 [ Twin Cities Ordnance Plant ]
8rds SL 53 [ St.Louis Ordnance Plant ]
BTW your DEN headstamp means Denver Ordnance Plant & the RA is Remington Arms
i guess i got lucky as all mine is non-corrosive

BTW According to this chart any U.S. mfg. after 1952 was non-corrosive except WRA [ 1954 ]

And the concensus on the CMP Forum is that all the AYR is noncorrosive too.

What kind of ammo cans do you guys have? I've only opened one so far and it was an old WW2 style ammo can with a healthy mix of headstamps. I'm hoping to sort it this weekend, putting all of the corrosive in one can and non in another.

Yep now thhe question being asked is...they advertised it as USGI ammo and it seems most everyone got a large portion of norweigan AYR..Ive seen someone say that it was made as a US contract so its USGI ammo but Im not so sure. I know when the spam cans of AP came out there was a bunch of AYR in there as well so Im not surprised a bunch showed up here too.

I guess my problem now is I really need a bolt action now to shoot the corrosive stuff!!!!!! Im waiting on the bolts from the CMP, I believe they said towards the end of the year they would have some available for sale.

Both my cans were late .30 cal cans.

I did get a pretty nice WWII can from them when they were selling belted ammo. I forgot I had that until I was trying to make room for these cans. I bought one belt of the Kynoch which came in the WWII can. I had bought one can of the belted HXP they offered and ended up scoring a belt of RA 54 with a matching marked can.

If you check the CMP Bolt Action Forum section on the CMP Forum, Orest has this statement posted:

Over the past ten years the Army has transferred to the CMP all depot stocks of Krags, M1917s, M1903, and M1903A3 rifles. In addition, a large quantity of M1903s were returned from overseas and also transferred to the CMP. There are no longer any of these model rifles on loan overseas or in Army inventory, other than what they reserved for museum use. For the past few years, the only source of these rifles was/is from veterans organizations (VFW, AL, AMVETS, MCL, etc) as they either shut their chapters or as they upgrade the worn out rifles to M1 Garands.

For all practical purposes, the CMP sold out of these rifles in 2009, but has accumulated a few more that we will begin inspecting and offering for sale sometime in 2011 – one model at a time. We have approximately 600 M1917s, 100 Krags, 400 M1903 and 400 M1903A3 models. At this time we cannot predict how many will pass inspection as complete rifles and how many will be just barreled receivers. Until we complete inspecting each and every one of these rifles and know what we have, we will not be able to set prices or take orders (or pre-orders) or establish a waiting list.

As with our smallbore rifles, once all of the above listed models are sold, that will basically end CMP sales of surplus bolt action rifles, except for the trickle – which we will probably just auction by then.

This post is provided as an answer to the numerous questions we receive about the availability of these models.

So that is only 1500 Bolt Rifles BEFORE inspection and grading..... i am sure all the Krags and at least 25% of the rest will be sold as barrelled actions/used for parts. You will have to be real lucky or quick on the draw when the waiting list comes out to get one.
BTW both my cans were mid-'50's AYR marked.

Well, I finished sorting all of my ammo. Half of it was the AYR, the other half was mixed corrosive, mainly SL headstamp, with some EW, TW (iirc) and a handful of other rounds mixed in. I put all the AYR together in the WW2 cans, put the corrosive in the modern cans to use as trading fodder later on.
