Isn't that the truth! You have a lot of great points. Realistically, in my neighborhood, the longest shot I'd ever have to take for SHTF would be around 75 yds because the streets curve around and crap like that, which my Saiga 12 could handle with relative ease. The AR10 is something I want to have incase SHTF, but I know I don't need it. An AK or AR would handle the job with the environment I'm in.

My recommendation out of the 2 choices is an AR-10

Its almost as accurate as a bolt gun

easily and rapidly reloaded

You can scoot and shoot if needed

Higher ROF if needed

Higher capacity

Infinitely and affordably modular

handles like an AR-15 but w. more recoil, yet less than a bolt gun

oh... and Id recommend no shorter than an 18" barrel on a .308

ETA after seeing your above post, an decent AR would be good too for that

Erik,

At one point I saw you trying to trrade your bolt gun for the AR-10. You may not be like me, but I have the AR and still want the bolt gun. You know your situation, but I'd try to get one without sacrificing the other.

Yea I was, but then I was able to buy one outright and sell the bolt gun to help replenish my funds...haha. I really tried to do both, but I know the bolt gun would just sit there and not be shot. I'm a little confused about why you think I don't like you. I don't have a problem with you or anyone on this board. I love all you guys and gals.

No, I meant you may not be the kind of person I am...wanting both the bolt gun and the AR10. You are correct, we're all friends here! :ber

Glad you got what you wanted. At the end of the day, that's what mattered. With that being said, I had my eye on that 308 bolt gun of yours. $$$ just wouldn't let me snatch it up.

I am building a DPMS Pattern Setup:

DPMS LR-308 Lower w/ LPK and Magpul CTR Stock (probably gonna replace with an ACS or PRS later)
Falcon Ergo Grip
DPMS LR-308 Chrome BCG
Fulton Armory Titan Upper (DPMS won't give even height with handguards)
BCM Gunfighter Charging Handle
18" DPMS SASS Barrel
5 Magpul 20rd PMags
1 C Products 5rd Mag
DPMS SASS Gas block and gas Tube

waiting on Troy Extreme Battlerail - supposed to be in development
if not I'll go with a Viking Tactics from JP

Still deciding on Flash Hider/Compensator

I'm going the DPMS LR308 build route myself.

Have the lower
Ordered 20 of these mags Magpul 20 Round LR308 PMAG https://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/ ... 8&cat=1828
And this buttstock Vltor EMOD Mil-Spec .308 CAR Stock Kit https://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/ ... 8&cat=1725
Now I'm saving up for the LRT-SASS Barrel Assembly https://www.dpmsinc.com/store/products/ ... 5&cat=1939
I'll post pics as I progress.

Question about tools, DPMS has a tool set, would that be all I need? Or is that overkill?

This is all new to me so I think once I have all that it's good to go?

I also, would like to get a 700 with the longest available barrel as well but time will tell.

I read the article about the 7.62x51 vs .308 round. Excellent read, learned a bunch thanks for the link!
But I'm wondering about the surplus rounds that are available. Does the age make them less reliable??

No expert here. The AR will shoot 150 gr bullets better than the heavier ones. That is a consideration at 1k yd.

Really if you want to regularly shoot at 1k yards, you will benefit by hanging out where people actually shoot 1k yards.

My bull barrel DPMS 308 generally shoots under 1moa with 150 gr. My bolt gun is .223. The wife and I are killers of 100yd targets.

Get both platforms over a period of one month or a year.....

Not bad for a shtf rifle capable of very good downrange accuracy.
Springfield Supermatch, McMillan bedded stock, Douglass SS Barrel....as made by Glen Nelson's M1A shop back in 2002.
An oldie and very goodie.
I need to air it out sometime at 600 yards.

Found a 26" barrel for the AR10, tempted to build another upper when the funds allow...

I'm right here in my life now where I have to make the decision!!!

LR308 with SS BBL, or a R700 .30-06 with B&C A2 stock, 26 inch krieger barrel and trued action

I know the LR308 can't touch that, but then again the all around rifle that I prefer is not a R700.

to me, an all around rifle is something that can hit a target at 600-700 yards, but then be able to go CQB.

I guess I'm having the hard time of, do I want an all around gun, or do I want a precision platform?

DECISIONS DECISIONS!!!

Taseal I'd go with the LR308. You can get black rifle disease with it, and they shoot very well. I've been there done that with both, and I still have my LR308. You just tend to shoot a little more ammo...haha. Let us know what you end up going with!

The AR 308 platform isn't the optimal tool for 1K. You can make modifications to improve it for 1K but in the end it cant reliably run the pressures or speeds a closed bolt system can. For the Mid and short game however, they are hard to beat. I used to run mine on the lower end of the pressure scale to preserve brass life while maintaining very good accuracy. I did take it out to 600 a few times but the wind will get you if your not paying attention.
