308 ARs

Postby Limeybtrd » Sun Jan 22, 2012 4:53 pm

Was looking at getting or building one for hunting purposes. Any thoughts and advise would be appreciated.
Long barrel like 24" is what I think I need to be at.

What are you going to be hunting, and at what range? I built a .308 AR to use hunting, and never have. Now I'm going to use a .300 Blackout.

those barrels are way to long and heavy to lug through the brush
In the days of the old west a 6 shooter was as common as cell phones are today and just annoying if they go off in a theater.

Did Mers just say that single shot rifle was good for self defense?

Why don't you tell us what type of hunting you expect to do?

I think he forget to mention that he reccommends surefires new monster suppressor to jab an intruder in the face if reloading is not possible.

I would like to see a handi-rifle with bayonet attachment.

I think it will be boar hogs and deers perhaps. In law wants me to go hunting sometime with him. Can't I just use the Ar 15?
Or go old school and take the Enfield Ishy.

Did you see the Sons of Guns episode where they built the 458 Socom AR-15 for hog hunting? Definately overkill, but some people want that.

You can use a regular AR in .223/5.56 as long as you place your shots and use the right ammo.

Same for FL deer. You may want a larger caliber for hunting deer elsewhere, but here in FL most deer aren't that much larger than my dog.

I know you mentioned a 24" barrel, but I'd consider a shorter barrel. I've seen 16" 308 guns taken out a long way with not much ill effect (Personally seen them taken to 500-600, know people who have gone out to 1k) and still getting good ballistics. If going with a 308 AR, I'd prefer something like that over a 24" gun. Especially if I were going to be traipsing through the woods with it for a day.

Have you ever picked up an AR-10, 24" barrel with a scope on it? If not think that it is like carrying a bag of cement as a good comparison.

Many years ago Nick Ward bought a custom built AR10 rifle (from Excalibur Arms I believe). This is the gun that Glockpacker eventually bought and I don't know who has it now. It had a 24" bull barrel. Nick let me try it out at "that place in the swamps" and it shot like a laser. But damn, that thing was nose heavy. Great for shooting off a bench but not something you'd want to take hunting.

A friend of mine just acquired a Rock River AR10 with a 16 inch barrel. I'll let you know what he thinks about it in a coupe of weeks after he gets a chance to sight it in, but it sure is handy to hold & carry.

If you're going to shoot with an AR, just do a caliber conversion...either .458 SOCOM or .300 Blackout. Blackout is cheaper and more readily available, and SOCOM hits harder. Take your pick.

I agree, for hunting in Florida, don't get hung up on .308. Check out the 300 blackout or 6.8mm (my personal choice)

I have a LR-308t with a 16" barrel. With $15/box Federal 150gr soft-points it is fully capable to 500 yards without any problem. Further than that I'm not capable.

If you want to build an upper for an AR-15 there are plenty of choices. 6.8SPC, .458 SOCOM, and 12.7x42mm (.50 Beowolf, now sold as the metric designation and MUCH more affordable). Also don't forget the 7.62x39, perfectly acceptable out to about 250-300 yards and still cheap to shoot.

I have the DPMS lr308. 16 in barrel, and it groups very well at 100. I haven't stretched it out much passed that. Never hunted with it, and not really sure I plan too..
I would handle the long bull barrel one a bunch before you settle on on. They are heavy, and its size will keep you from shooting it.
You can also build or buy an upper for your AR in a slightly bigger caliber. Im looking at .25 wssm for a new upper build.
