AR in .300 Whisper

Postby g.willikers » Sat Dec 10, 2011 3:02 pm

Someone from Smith & Wesson was on the Guntalk radio show, last Sunday.
He was sharing info on some new stuff they will be selling, soon.
One was a .300 Whisper upper that fits a standard lower.
Another was a under $700 AR.
It's getting harder and harder to keep money in the bank, ain't it?

Pretty much the same as the 300 Blackout. I think they had to stick with the 300 Whisper name because i think AAC trademarked the 300 Blackout name. A little birdie at DPMS told me they have some crazy stuff coming out in the same caliber(other than the two they already advertised)

I have one i am building up on Monday(waiting on receivers) Will post some pics if i get around to it. It's been driving me crazy because i have everything i need except the receivers....I already have some hand loads sitting here waiting for it.

I think .300 Whisper is also TMed. Hence, .300-221, IIRC. Either way, I want one.

The opposite is true. 300 Whisper(R) is trademarked and a license is needed to use that name.

300 AAC Blackout is not trademarked and requires no permission, license, or royalty. There are about 75 companies supporting it so far. It is the new industry standard and was adopted by SAAMI.

S&W owns Thompson, who had a prior relationship with SSK/Whisper - which is probably why they continued on with the pre-SAAMI version.

If Noveske every calls me back to finalize my barrel order, I'll let you know how much better 300 Blackout is [smilie=011.gif]

Just do a web search of "300 whisper vs 300 blackout" and you will find tons of articles about it.

I don't think so. BLK is standardized, Whisper is not. BLK may fit some Whisper barrels, won't fit others.

The cases are pretty much the same but max SAAMI OAL is different and so are the pressures but there is some ammo that is designed to be compatible with both.
I got my 300 BLK all together to but i got so excited i left all my mags and tools at the shop today so i couldn't shoot it other than a few single shots. I gotta do some more work to it anyway, i have to adjust the JP gas block but the forearm does not have an slot over the adjustment screw so i have to mill a hole in my brand new YHM Tod Jarret forearm [smilie=012.gif] .Oh well i will clean it up nice. btw...the couple of rounds i put through it had a nice thump to it compared to a .223

My 300 Whisper build was sidelined by the introduction of the 300 AAC Blackout. The build nearly complete, the Whisper barrel was reamed to 300 AAC Blackout to take advantage of industry support. An adjustable gas block was used and when shut off, and suppressed, you can hear the bullet impact the paper at 100 yards. My favorite rifle by far.
BTW, rsilvers who posted above was the driving force behind the Blackout meeting SAAMI spec. Hats off to you, sir.

What gas block did you use?

I recognize the rsilvers name from the suppressor board. How'd you come by this little thread?

Gas block by Paladin Machine Service, 803 475 7542. They also re-chambered the barrel.

So who's making ammo for them or are most just rolling their own? Ammo cannot be cheap.

A bunch of people, Remington, UMC, Hornady, as well as some smaller shops. Allot of people roll their own too.
Cheapest factory ammo is $0.65/round, but I don't think anyone buys 300BLK for plinking.
Bill Alexander (guy who made 6.5 Grendel) has stated he is working (with Wolf?) to produce steel cased 300BLK ammo like he did with 6.5.

ETA: and Barnes is releasing a 300BLK optimized solid copper 110gr TSX head for this platform which should be the bee's knee's for pigs. Should be similar to their current p/n: 30871 which was optimized for 7.62x40 (300BLK is 7.62x35).

Tom, there's tons of information about suppliers on the BLKT board...definitely worth parusing. I found a used AAC barrel on ARF, but there are new ones in the 300 range. Just remember you'll need freefloat, so a complete upper could be a better value for you.

Guys, RSilvers is one of the creators of Blackout and an employee of AAC/Freedom Group. He saw the potential with 300 Whisper and pushed to standardize it. Cool stuff!!!

ETA: Here's an upper for $320, or $335 with stainless barrel.

Got my 8" 300BLK barrel in the mail yesterday and put mine together. I'm ready to hand out death pills to the hogs now.

You need to coat that upper to match the lower! I know a guy that'd Norrel coat it in his storage unit...
